Advanced Education in General Dentistry

Program Overview

The UW AEGD is a one-year postgraduate residency that bridges the gap between dental school and independent advanced practice. Residents train across the full scope of general dentistry under specialist mentorship at partner community clinic sites across Washington State — emerging practice-ready, confident, and eligible for Washington State licensure.​

Residents​

  • Residents receive certificate upon completion of one-year program​
  • Upon certification, may pursue pathway to licensure in Washington state​

Faculty​

  • Each clinic site houses local AEGD Director​
  • General dentists/specialists preceptor affiliate faculty, UW School of Dentistry (UWSOD)

Program Goals and Objectives

  • Provide comprehensive, patient-centered oral health care, including emergency and preventive services.​
  • Plan and deliver multidisciplinary care for diverse patients, including those with special needs.​
  • Manage oral health services using effective practice management and quality improvement principles.​
  • Work efficiently within interdisciplinary health care teams across varied settings.​
  • Apply scientific principles, critical thinking, evidence-based decisions, and technology in care delivery.​
  • Uphold professional ethics, lifelong learning, cultural competence, and adaptability.​
  • Address community oral health needs through service and outreach.

Competency Statement

UW AEGD residents will obtain advanced knowledge and clinical skills in general dentistry, surpassing those of predoctoral dental education. Residents will achieve competency in all evaluated areas by the end of their training for certification.​

Medical Emergencies​

  • Exposure at clinical sites​
  • Elements of Moderate Sedation lecture series and ACLS certification​

Implant Dentistry​

  • Didactic training with UW post-grad programs.​
  • Exposure to implant systems, techniques, and technologies via vendor demos​
  • Partnerships with UWSOD specialty clinics.​

Oral Medicine & Pain Management​

  • Seminar series and guest lectures from UWSOD Oral Medicine faculty on oral mucosal diseases, TMD, and orofacial pain.
