Department: Restorative Dentistry

Dr. Suresh Nayar graduated from the Government Dental College, Calicut, Kerala, India in 1993 and, completed postgraduate training in Prosthodontics at the prestigious College of Dental Sciences, Manipal University. He began his academic career as a Senior Lecturer in Bangalore, developing his passion for teaching and mentorship, before working as a specialist Prosthodontist in the Middle East and subsequently moving to the United Kingdom.

He gained competitive entry into the five year specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Sheffield, where he obtained Membership Diplomas in Prosthodontics from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh, England, and Glasgow, followed by the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, leading to his inclusion on the UK General Dental Council specialist lists in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Endodontics and Periodontics.

In 2009, he was appointed Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Rehabilitation at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, alongside roles as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant at the University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry. He served as an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the General Dental Council, and as Regional Specialty Adviser for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

In 2013, he was recruited as a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist to the internationally renowned Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) and as an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, Canada, where he became Director of Clinics at iRSM, and achieved tenure.

In 2026, he joined the University of Washington School of Dentistry as Director of the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Service, continuing his commitment to specialist clinical care, education, research, and innovation in oral rehabilitation.

Dr Nayar has received research funding of over $110,000 as a primary investigator and nearly $240,000 in team funding.  He has authored 38 peer-reviewed publications with a focus in maxillofacial prosthodontics and three textbook chapters, with two of them in the seminal textbook on maxillofacial prosthodontics by Dr John Beumer.

His research interests are in:

1. Improving patient outcomes in head and neck oncology oral rehabilitation with advanced jaw reconstruction and innovative digital technologies both nationally and internationally.
2. Exploring patient perspectives in head and neck cancer survivors.

Among former roles, he has served as Graduate Program Director (UNC), Department Chair (UNC and NYU), and Executive Vice Dean and COO (UNC). Dr. Ritter has been involved in clinical and laboratory research, particularly in the areas of adhesive dentistry, caries risk assessment, and caries management. He has also maintained a part-time intramural clinical practice while serving as a faculty member at UNC and NYU (2000-2022).

Dr. Ritter has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, 80 research abstracts, and co-authored over 20 book chapters. He has edited three editions of the bestselling dental textbook “The Sturdevant’s Art and Science of Operative Dentistry” (Elsevier) and is co-author of “Composite Veneers: The Direct-Indirect Technique” (Quintessence Books).

Dr. Ritter is a member of several dental organizations, including the American and International Associations for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the American Dental Association. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Ritter has presented many scientific papers and continuing education courses regionally, nationally, and internationally. As Dean at the UW School of Dentistry, Dr. Ritter is working with various stakeholders to advance oral health for all in the region through education, research, oral health practice, and service to the community.

Dr. Tucker serves as the course director for the Cast Gold Restoration selective course during autumn and winter quarters.  He is also the co-course director for the Advanced Restorative Dentistry selective course in the spring quarter and serves as a clinical attending for third- and fourth-year dental students in the Restorative Clinic.

Dr. Tucker has an interest in fly fishing, sailing (he has twice skippered a 33-foot sailboat to Hawaii in the Victoria to Maui Yacht Race), mountain climbing (including five peaks over 18,000 feet), ice climbing, and skiing.

Dr. Peng is the co-course director of the fixed prosthodontics for the second-year dental students. She also serves as a clinical attending for the third- and fourth-year dental students in the restorative clinic.

Dr. Peng’s research interest is digital dentistry, mainly in testing the printed materials for fixed and removal prostheses, comparing physical properties, accuracy, patient satisfaction, etc…. of different fabrication methods and materials in order to find a better option for clinical use and lab fabrication.

Dr. Peng had held the faculty appointment as a clinical assistant professor at University at Buffalo. She was the course director of indirect course for the second-year dental students She also supervised in the clinic for predoc dental students and post-graduate prosthodontic students. (2021-2024).

She is a member of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, American College of Prosthodontists, Academy of Osseointegration, and board-certified for the American Board of Prosthodontics.

Dr. Peng enjoys learning languages, music, and art.

Dr. Smith has practiced general dentistry in Spokane, Washington since 1982. She is the RIDE Clinical Director for Eastern Washington (2014-present), an ADA Success Series National Lecturer (2000-present) and team dentist (1982-present) for the Spokane Chiefs Hockey Team. In addition to lecturing for the American Dental Association, she has lectured nationally and internationally on practice management, women in leadership, and sports dentistry.

Dr. Smith is a member of the American Dental Association, the Washington State Dental Association, the Spokane District Dental Society and the Academy of Sports Dentistry. She is a life member of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. After serving as president of SDDS, WSDA and WAGD, Dr. Smith served as the Eleventh District Trustee to the ADA, 2006-2010. She has been awarded fellowships by the International College of Dentists, the American Academy of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Currently, she serves as the Eleventh District Regent to the International College of Dentists, USA Section.

As a student Dr. Smith received the American Society of Dentistry for Children clinical achievement award. In recognition of her service for various Washington State Legislative Dental Initiatives, she was awarded the WSDA President’s Award in 1997. In 2000 she received the ADA’s Meritorious Geriatric Oral Care Award for a video focusing on techniques for assisting Alzheimer Patients with oral care. Upon receiving her MBA in Health Care Management from Gonzaga University in 2013, she was selected by the faculty as the Outstanding MBA Student. In 2014, recognizing over 30 years of service with the Spokane Chief’s Hockey Team, she was awarded the Western Hockey League Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with her family, renovating homes with her husband, cooking and travelling

Dr. Maebo is currently teaching a practice management course within the fourth year comprehensive dentistry curriculum.  Additionally, he is a faculty member in the Fixed Prosthodontics course for second year dental students.  Dr. Maebo serves as a clinical attending for third and fourth year dental students in the Restorative Clinic.

Dr. Maebo is active in organized dentistry as a member of the ADA, WSDA, SKCDA, and ADEA.  At the University of Washington, Dr. Maebo is the Director of Clinical Education and Calibration.  He has volunteered for the Seattle King County Peer Review committee for 29 years and is an officer of the UW chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.  Dr. Maebo has lectured locally and internationally on Atraumatic Restorative Technique (ART) and its use in emerging counties.  Dr. Maebo received the SeattleMet Top Dentists- Bellevue for over ten consecutive years.  He serves as the Western Regional Clinical Director for the RIDE Program and is fully committed to supporting rural and underserved communities.

When not in Seattle, you can find Dr. Maebo at his cabin on Whidbey Island where he spends most of his leisure time crabbing, fishing, and exploring with his family and dog, Toby.

Dr. Chianglin has been in private practice for over 20 years before joining the University of Washington School of Dentistry as clinical faculty.  She is also the Restorative Faculty RIDE Liaison for the RIDE program and serves on the UWSOD admissions committee.  Dr. Chianglin serves as the Everyone For Veterans Restorative Clinic Supervisor overseeing 4^th year dental students who provide dental care to veterans in the E4V program.

Dr. Chianglin was nominated by the UWSOD class of 2023 as an outstanding faculty member.

Dr. Chianglin is a member of the WA State Dental Association, American Dental Association, and Snohomish County Dental Society.

Dr. Shor’s research interests are in the area of Implant Dentistry and CAD/CAM technology.

Dr. Shor maintains a part-time private practice in the South Lake Union area of Seattle, where she practices with her husband, Dr. Alex Shor. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, and also holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor position in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, also at the University of Washington. Prior to returning to Seattle, Dr. Shor served as an Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Previously, she was also a Clinical Instructor at the KLE Society’s Dental College in Belgaum, India.

When Dr. Shor is not engaged in dentistry, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, traveling and classical music.

Currently, Dr. Schwedhelm maintains a private practice in Seattle as well as being a Clinical Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington. In the past he has held other titles at the University of Washington including Acting Assistant Professor (2000-2001), Clinical Assistant Professor (1999-2000), Affiliate Assistant Professor (1998-1999), Acting Assistant Professor (1996-1998) and Clinical Instructor (1994-1996). At the University of British Columbia he held the position of Associate Instructor of Restorative Dentistry from (1983-1985). He held the positions of Associate Instructor (1981-1983) at Indiana University and Assistant Instructor (1978-1979) at the Universidad Tecnologica de Mexico. He has also been a consultant for the Washington State Department of Health, Health Professional Quality Assurance Division, and the Investigation Service Unit from March 2000 to the present. From 1990 to 2001 he was an Attending Staff member at Lions Gate Hospital. He has held a Co-Chair position on the Curriculum Committee at the University of Washington, as well as having been an Accreditation Team Member in 2002 and participating in the Career Enhancement/Growth Program in the Department of Restorative Dentistry from 2001 to the present. He holds dental licenses in Mexico, Alberta (Canada, non-practicing), British Columbia (Canada, non-practicing), the state of Washington and the state of Illinois.

Dr. Schwedhelm’s honors include a scholarship for post-graduate studies abroad from the Consejo de Ciencia y Tecnologica, Dedication and Enthusiasm in Teaching Award from the University of Washington Class of 1997, Outstanding Part-Time Instructor Award from the Class of 1998, Excellence in Teaching Award from the Class of 2000, Excellence in Teaching Award from the Class of 2001, Certificate of Excellence Award from the Class of 2002, Bruce R. Rothwell Distinguished Teacher Award 2004, 2002 Teacher of the Year Award from the Class of 2004, Full Time Faculty of the Year Award from the Class of 2003, and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society in June 2002. In March of 2006 he received the Charles Craig Teaching Award from the Omicrom Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.

Dr. Schwedhelm continues to attend CDE courses in the field of Prosthodontics to keep himself abreast of the latest developments and techniques. He also has several publications to his name in his chosen field. Other areas of interest to Dr. Schwedhelm include new implant techniques and dental technology.

Dr. Schwedhelm is also fluent in both Spanish and English.

Dr. Schwedhelm holds family to be very important and has participated in his children’s lives not only as a father, but as a coach of youth sports. He is also very involved in his church and volunteering in youth-oriented programs.

Dr. Sadr’s scholarly work is focused on research and development of new restorative dental materials, mainly resin composites and adhesives. He is an advocate of minimally invasive dentistry, and has been investigating non-invasive diagnostic modalities including optical coherence tomography to image teeth and surrounding structures without the use of ionizing radiation. Dr. Sadr is interested in adoption of advanced technology and digital workflow in the clinical practice of dentistry.

Dr. Sadr maintains a faculty practice at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and has been a member of the American Dental Association, International Associations for Dental Research (IADR), International Academy for Adhesive Dentistry, Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry, and other professional organizations.

Dr. Sadr has authored and coauthored over 160 full-length peer-reviewed research publications, and been invited to speak at several dental conferences and schools worldwide. He has received external funding for his research from national and international organizations in the United States and Japan. He has also served as a reviewer in the fields of dentistry, materials science and optics including Journal of Dental Research, Dental Materials, Journal of Dentistry, Dental Materials Journal, Journal of Biomedical Optics, Journal of Adhesive Dentistry and others.

Dr. Sadr has supervised postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers in various institutions including UW (B4T) and TMDU in projects that have brought his group domestic and international scientific awards, including five consecutive outstanding research prizes in adhesive dentistry. In 2019, Dr. Sadr was acknowledged by the class of 2021 with the 2nd Year Faculty Award.

Dr. Sadr has a background in campaigning for social justice and experience in media and information technology. He enjoys reading, learning languages, music, outdoor activities, skiing and travelling with his family.

Dr. Kronstrom’s research specialty is in the fields of Dental Implants, Decision Making in Prosthodontics and Dental Education. His research focuses on clinical studies in Implant Dentistry in order to develop new and less expensive treatment options for edentulous patients.  He has given several presentations nationally and internationally and authored numerous articles in international peer-reviewed prosthodontic journals.

Dr. Kronstrom maintains a private Faculty Practice and is a member of the International College of Prosthodontists, the Academy of Osseointegration, the International/American Association for Dental Research.  He is mentoring a PhD student at Malmo University, Sweden, and is a reviewer for the International Journal of Prosthodontics, the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and BMC Medical Journal. He serves as an IRB member on the Human Subjects Committee at the University of Washington.

Dr. Kronstrom’s personal interests include his family, dogs and gardening.  He has a sincere interest in classic American automobiles.

Dr. Dogan has a dental background in pre-, and clinical teaching and is currently instructing several classes including Restorative Dentistry, Dental Anatomy and Occlusion, and Functional Occlusion. He is also an implant advisor in Restorative Dentistry for the Undergraduate Clinic, and supervises clinical graduate students in prosthodontics and third- and fourth-year dental students in restorative dentistry.

Dr. Dogan directs the DENTCL 631 Prosthodontics Clerkship program for the third year dental students.

Dr. Dogan is actively participating in clinical practice and carrying out clinical research. His research focuses on developing new treatments towards novel dental health care, in which Dr. Dogan is in a unique position to direct experimental test groups and formulation of remineralization for relevance to clinical applications. Based on his background as a clinician with the expertise of basic sciences in cell culturing and bacterial tests with different dental materials, Dr. Dogan leads the establishment of new formulations and selection of in-use treatments for comparison to the remineralization protocols developed. He is also focusing on in vivo mineralization and characterization of the remineralized tissues. Dr. Dogan supervises dental students and graduate students in research.

Dr. Dogan has held faculty appointments as an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of Hannover Dental School in 2000 and 2001. He maintains memberships in the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the German Society of Dental Oral and Craniomandibular Sciences (DGZMK) and the German Society of Dental Implantology (DGI). He holds dental licenses in Germany and the state of Washington . He was awarded the Best Dissertation of 1998 award by the German Society of Periodontology.

Dr. Dogan’s personal interests include classical and world music, movies, and outdoor activities (especially running, hiking, biking, and snowshoeing).

Dr. Chen’s research interests are in the area of all ceramic systems and the application of CAD/CAM technology in the restorative dentistry.

Dr. Chen is a member of the  American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, American College of Prosthodontists, and board-eligible for the American Board of Prosthodontics. Dr. Chen’s clinical interests focus on esthetics and implant restorative dentistry. He currently maintains a part-time private practice in Seattle with his wife, Dr. Kanako Nagatomo. Dr. Chen has presented his research and clinical work at several scientific meetings both nationally and internationally. He has authored numerous articles in various peer reviewed journals and coauthored a book chapter. Dr. Chen was acknowledged by the Class of 2019 for contributing in teaching at the University of Washington.

Dr. Chan has pursued research in many areas of Dentistry, including dental materials and how they interact with the biology of the human mouth.  He has authored numerous scientific and clinical articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Chan has held faculty appointments at a number of schools apart from the University of Washington, including the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and the University of Iowa. He has served on several editorial boards, and committees for various organizations. He is a member of the Asian-Pacific Academy of Dentistry, The Indian Academy of Restorative Dentistry (Honorary Member), the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association (Eastern District), the International Association for Dental Research, the American Association of Dental Schools Operative and Biomaterials Division, the Hong Kong Dental Association (Overseas Member), the Dental Materials group of the IADR/AADR, the Academy of Dental Materials, the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Washington State Dental Association and the Seattle King County Dental Society.

In 2006 he received the Outstanding Faculty Member Nomination from the Freshman class of the Medical College of Georgia.  At the University of Texas Health Science Center he was nominated as Teacher of the Year in the Lab Instructor category in 1997. Also in 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and won a Presidential Teaching Award at the University of Texas Health Center. In 1995 he was recognized in the BF Goodrich Collegiate Inventors Program.

Dr. Anderson’s research interests are in the area of Operative Dentistry.

Dr. Anderson maintains a private practice in Kent, WA. He is currently a Lecturer, Course Director in Restorative Dentistry and a WREB Preparatory Course Director at the University of Washington. In addition to teaching, he is also active in acquiring resources for endowments which improve faculty and student development.

Dr. Anderson is a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the Seattle District Dental Society, the Washington State Dental Association, a Life Member of the American Dental Association, a Life Member of the Dean’s Club in the University of Washington School of Dentistry, and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the President’s Club at the University of Washington. He is a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry (President, 1988-89), Associated Ferrier Study Clubs (President, 1981-82), the George Ellsperman Gold Foil Seminar (President, 1972-73), and the University of Washington Dental Alumni Association (President, 1996).

Dr. Anderson has received many professional and academic honors in his career, including: Omicrom Kappa Upsilon, several Outstanding Teacher Awards, was named Commencement Speaker by the class of 1984, and received a Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1994 from the Dental Alumni Association. He has also been awarded Fellowships by the American College of Dentists (1979), the International College of Dentists (1982) and the Academy of Dentistry International (1982). In 1997 he received an Award of Excellence from the Academy of Operative Dentistry. In 1998 he was awarded the University of Washington School of Dentistry Dean’s Club Award, and in 2001 he received the International College of Dentists Distinguished Fellow Award. The American Academy of Gold Foil Operators awarded him their highest honor, the Distinguished Member Award. He is a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Dr. Anderson was Managing Editor of the journal Operative Dentistry from 1974-1999.

He is the author of several publications and essays, relating primarily to his work in Operative Dentistry.

Dr. Anderson interests include his family, church and a great deal of community involvement. He has a keen interest in exotic and classic cars, and has won several awards for his efforts in this area.
