Education and Training

Dr. Sutton received his D.D.S. from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1985. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and completed three tours of duty before being accepted into the USAF Prosthodontics Residency Program in 1994. He completed his residency in 1997 and then his Fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics in 1998 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Texas. He is a Diplomate of The American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists and a Fellow in the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics.

Awards and Professional Service

Before becoming the Director of Maxillofacial Prosthetics Services at the University of Washington, Dr. Sutton was a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and Director, Occlusion II course and the Advance Prosthodontics course. He was also Co-Director of the Fixed Prosthodontics and Removable Prosthodontics Laboratory courses.

Dr. Sutton served for 29 years in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps. His experiences included: Director Resident Education and Director of Prosthodontics Research, Director of Fixed Prosthodontics and then Prosthodontics Program Director, Dental Laboratory Flight Commander at Lackland AFB, Chief, Department of Prosthodontics and Dental Laboratory Flight Commander at Ramstein AB, Germany as well as the USAFE Prosthodontics Consultant. He was the Military Consultant to the Surgeon General for Dental Laboratories and the Director, of the Area Dental Laboratory at Peterson AFB from 2006 to 2010,. Then he became the Director, Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and at the San Antonio Military Medical Center from 2010-2014. Additionally, he was the Chairman, ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products, Subcommittee 9.66, Scanning Accuracy of Dental Chair-side and Laboratory CAD CAM systems that developed and finalized ADA/ANSI Standard 132.

Dr. Sutton has received numerous teaching awards to include the Chancellor’s Teaching Recognition Award (2015, 2017), the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2016, 2019), and Outstanding Clinical Instructor (2015, 2018, 2021). Additionally, he received the USAF Legion of Merit Medal (2014), Outstanding Senior Dental Educator of the Year for the Air Force Postgraduate Dental School (2013), American College of Prosthodontists, Major General Bill Lefler Federal Service Award (2012) and International Academy of Gnathology Scholarship Award (1999).
