New grant supports researcher training in UW-Kenya partnership

Delta Dental gives $1 million for dental hygiene training at UW

January 26, 2021 - Delta Dental of Washington has announced a $1 million grant to the University of Washington School of Dentistry to support a partnership between Shoreline Community College’s Dental Hygiene Program and the dental school. In addition, to further the growth of the program, Delta Dental will issue a $500,000 challenge grant to match funds raised by area dental and dental hygienist societies this year. Dental association to honor faculty member as top humanitarian

January 11, 2021 - Dr. Theresa Cheng of the School of Dentistry faculty will receive the 2021 American Dental Association Humanitarian Award for her work on behalf of veterans, the ADA has announced. She was unanimously recommended by the ADA selection committee for the honor, one of the highest bestowed by the organization. Read more about Dr. Cheng.

Orthodontics residents show their artistry with wire sculptures

December 17, 2020 - Continuing a 54-year-old tradition, five first-year residents in the UW School of Dentistry’s Department of Orthodontics have crafted wire sculptures for the department’s exhibition. Read more about wire sculptures.

School launches drive to fund dental care for combat veterans

Oral health summit to focus on behavioral science

October 28, 2020 - Oral health isn’t just about teeth. Thoughts and behaviors also play a big part. Dentists have long known the importance of influencing people’s behaviors and attitudes to promote healthy teeth and gums. That explains a good deal of the impetus for the Behavioral and Social Oral Health Sciences Summit, which will be held this Thursday and Friday in a virtual space. School wins $1M grant for teledentistry project

October 9, 2020 - The School of Dentistry has won a $1 million federal grant that will upgrade infrastructure for teledentistry in Washington and Montana and improve the school’s distance-learning capability. Read more about RIDE Grant.

Shoreline CC is school’s new dental hygiene training partner

September 28, 2020 - Dental hygienist training at the UW School of Dentistry is expanding significantly, thanks to a new partnership between the school and Shoreline Community College. This year, 10 Shoreline students in the second year of their school’s accredited two-year program are training at the School of Dentistry before receiving their Dental Hygiene Associate of Applied Sciences degree. Dr. Douglass Jackson to lead school’s heightened diversity efforts

Ground broken on $100M training facility

Dr. Russell Deal named Wands Fellow

August 10, 2020 - He becomes the school’s 13th Wands Fellow and the first UW DDS alumnus to receive the fellowship since Dr. Josh Manchester, who earned his DDS in 2013 and was the 2015-16 Wands Fellow. Read more about Wands Fellowship.

Ultra-small, parasitic bacteria found in groundwater, moose – and you

July 22, 2020 - Inside your mouth lives a group of bacteria whose closest relatives can also be found in the belly of a moose, in dogs, cats, and dolphins, and in groundwater deep under the Earth’s surface. In a noteworthy discovery, scientists led by a UW School of Dentistry researcher have found that these organisms have adapted to these incredibly diverse environments without radically changing their genetic makeup, or genomes.  Read more about Saccharibacteria.

Dental school creates “virtual commencement” video

July 20, 2020 - Live commencement ceremonies were among the many disruptions the COVID-19 pandemic created this spring, and the UW School of Dentistry was no exception. The outbreak forced the cancellation of the school’s traditional Hooding ceremony, in which students receive their doctoral hoods before an audience of family members, spouses, and friends.  Read more about commencement 2020.

UW receives $2.25 million federal grant to improve dental care for children with special health care needs

Dental student receives Latino Center for Health fellowship

May 26, 2020 - Mariany Morales, a third-year student at the UW School of Dentistry, has been selected to receive a UW Latino Center for Health Student Fellowship, the center has announced.
