Course Description

Dental professionals regularly identify oral lesions, but once a lesion has been identified, what is the next step? This course will discuss differential diagnosis, biopsy techniques and subsequent management of oral lesions. At the end of the day, participants should be comfortable making simple differentials and will know whether or not a referral must be made immediately. A brief synopsis on how lesions are managed and treated after referral will also be discussed.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to understand:

  • Demonstrate improved skills in the recognition of clinical and radiographic abnormalities
  • Demonstrate improved skills in examination of the head and neck including palpating for lymph nodes, neck lumps and a systematic oral examination.
  • Exhibit improved proficiency in the development of a clinical differential diagnosis based on clinical and radiographic findings
  • Determine which lesion should be biopsied by the dentist and how to best perform the biopsy
  • Recognize the histopathologic findings associated with common pathologic conditions of the oral and maxillofacial region
  • Describe current treatment options and prognoses of common pathologic conditions of the oral and maxillofacial region
