Course Description

Despite the proven safety and effectiveness of fluoride, fluoride hesitancy among patients and communities is a growing clinical challenge. In his talk, Dr. Chi will provide published and hot-off-the press data from a 7-year NIH-funded study of fluoride hesitancy in King County, Washington.

Course Objectives:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:

  • Quantify how common fluoride hesitancy is in practice.
  • Describe reasons why parents are hesitant about fluoride.
  • Outline clinical strategies to address fluoride hesitancy.

Instructor

Dr. Donald ChiDonald Chi is a board-certified pediatric dentist and health services researcher, is a Professor of Oral Health Sciences and Associate Dean for Research in the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He is also a Professor in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health in the School of Public Health.

His research focuses on children’s oral health. He draws on knowledge from the social and behavioral sciences, with the goal of eliminating inequities and improving the oral health of vulnerable populations. Dr. Chi has published over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Chi teaches public health and clinical pediatric dentistry, and treats patients at the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle’s Central District and Othello neighborhoods.

Registration

Simply register online. You will be directed to UW CDE’s secure online registration. Register for “An Evidence-Based Update on Fluoride in an Increasingly Fluoride-Hesitant World – a recorded online course”. You will receive an emailed confirmation letter with a link to the video. An online exam will be sent upon viewing the whole video. Once you have passed the exam, UW CDE will email you a certificate of completion certificate will be emailed to you automatically. You will have until June 30th of the current CDE course year (September – June) to complete the training.

  • If you do not complete the training by June 30th of the current CDE course year (September – June), you will have to sign up for the course again. No refunds will be given for online courses.

Washington State Dentists and Online Course Materials

Please note that per WAC 246-817-440-4bi, while there is no longer a limit to the number of hours Washington State dentists may take for continuing education provided online, please note that for pre-recorded or other forms of non-live presentations where there is not an instructor presenting in real-time and able to respond to questions in real-time, thirty minutes will count for every one hour completed for this type of activity.
