Last week, the UW School of Dentistry’s Mark Yang (‘28) and Paridhi Garg (‘27) received first- and second-place awards, respectively, at the 2026 Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) National Scientific Session in Las Vegas, NV.
The UW School of Dentistry Student AGD Chapter continues to distinguish itself as a premier student organization by providing exceptional continuing education opportunities for students and faculty alike. The UW chapter’s recognition at the national session continues a history of multiple research awards over the years.

Competing alongside residents, attending doctors, and practicing dentists from across the country, Mark earned first place in the systematic literature review category for his project, “Synergy of Fluoride and Xylitol in Dental Caries Prevention: A Systematic Literature Review.” Paridhi received second place in the same category for her project, “Do Coronal Sealing Strategies Affect Endodontic Outcomes? A Systematic Review of In Vivo Studies.”
Kristi Trinh (‘27) also presented at the session, and Chapter President Aaron Nguyen (‘27) and Dr. James Newman of the UW Department of Restorative Dentistry attended to provide guidance and leadership.
“I am truly grateful for the wide range of research opportunities at UW and for the mentorship that helps students turn their ideas into meaningful projects,” said Mark. “I am especially thankful for the support of my mentors, Drs. Newman and [Teddy] Dong, whose guidance has been invaluable throughout this research journey.” Mark is the incoming UW AGD student chapter president.

“It was a privilege to present my research at the AGD Annual Scientific Session and represent both the University of Washington School of Dentistry and the UWSOD AGD Student Chapter on a national stage,” said Paridhi. “Receiving this award was both humbling and motivating, and it has strengthened my commitment to advancing evidence-based dentistry and improving patient care.”
The UW AGD chapter also recognizes the mentorship, research support, and sponsorship provided by Drs. Ali Sadr and Timothy Hess, as well as Valerie Bartoli, WAGD CEO, whose collective commitment to advancing clinical education and research has helped establish a strong foundation for student success.

Through innovative programming in digital dentistry, implantology, and contemporary clinical techniques, the chapter has fostered a culture of lifelong learning that extends beyond the traditional dental curriculum.
