Course Overview

This first of four courses provides an immersion in in a group practice atmosphere that simulates general dental practice. Students will provide comprehensive dental care to patients of all ages and stages of life, in the general practice clinic and the Center for Pediatric Dentistry.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course series, students will be able to demonstrate competence in:

1. Applying the basic principles of critical thinking, and problem-solving to scientific inquiry and an analysis of research methodology, especially as they relate to the practice of evidence- based dentistry and the comprehensive care of patients.
2. The ability to self-assess. Dentists must be active participants in the development of professional competencies and the professional values and capacities associated with a self-directed professional that is dedicated to lifelong learning.
3. Explaining at a high level the etiology, epidemiology, differential diagnosis, pathogenesis, prevention, treatment and prognosis of oral and oral-related disorders. This requires applying to patient care an in-depth understanding of basic biological principles, consisting of a core of information on the fundamental structures, functions and interrelationships of the body systems, emphasizing that the orofacial complex is an important anatomical area existing in a complex biological interrelationship with the entire body.
4. Applying the biomedical sciences to the delivery of patient care.
5. Applying the fundamental principles of behavioral sciences as they pertain to patient-centered approaches to comprehensive care.
6. Managing a diverse patient population, using the interpersonal and communications skills to function successfully in a multicultural work environment.
7. Applying legal and regulatory concepts related to the provision and/or support of oral health care services.
8. Applying the basic principles and philosophies associated with patient-centered practice management. They must understand various models of oral health care delivery, and how to function successfully as the leader of the oral health care team.
9. Communicating and collaborating with other members of the health care team in the provision of health care.
10. Applying the principles of ethical decision-making and demonstrating an understanding of their professional responsibilities in the provision of patient care.
11. Accessing, critically appraising, applying, and communicating scientific and lay literature as it relates to providing evidence-based patient care.
12. Providing oral health care within the scope of general dentistry to patients in all stages of life.
13. Assessing the treatment needs of patients with special needs.
14. Solving complex problems in case management.
15. Perform a basic hard and soft tissue head and neck and dental examination to facilitate proper diagnosis of all the patient’s oral and maxillofacial diseases and conditions.
16. Incorporate risk assessment for and prevention of caries, periodontal disease, and head and neck cancer, including dietary and salivary analysis, into the assessment and treatment of prosthodontics, implant, and restorative dentistry patients.
17. Prescribe and evaluate diagnostic radiographic imaging (including CBCT, if needed), and recommend biopsies, referrals, and other special evaluations, if needed, to facilitate proper diagnosis and management of all the patient’s oral and maxillofacial diseases and conditions.
18. Diagnose, assess, and explain the management of diseased teeth, defective or failing dental restorations, missing teeth, edentulous ridges, soft tissue pathology, parafunctional habits, and occlusal discrepancies, particularly as they relate to the provision of prosthodontics, implant, or restorative care.
19. Explain and integrate other dental specialties including orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery, into fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontic and restorative treatment, and coordinate care among these specialties for a prosthodontics or implant case.
20. Design comprehensive sequenced and staged patient-centered dental treatment plans, incorporating preventive and prosthetic and/or restorative dental treatment, to address the needs and desires of the dental patient.
21. Accurately self-assess the quality of one’s own work.
