DR. JAMES Q. BARNES, ORTHODONTICS CLASS OF 1954

Dr. James BarnesDr. James Quincy “Jim” Barnes died on March 3, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. He was 100 years young.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1921 in Santa Anna, Texas, to Leola Christie and William F. Barnes. He went to Santa Anna High School, home of the Mighty Mountaineers, where his love of tennis began. He earned a bachelor’s degree at The University of Texas at Austin, and graduated from The University of Texas Dental School at Houston, where he was a member of the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. He completed his degree in pediatric dentistry at The Forsythe Institute in Cambridge, Mass., and subsequently served at a children’s home in Waco, Texas. He then completed a degree in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.

After he opened his orthodontic practice in San Antonio, Dr. Barnes served as president of, and had a lifetime membership with, the San Antonio District Dental Society. He taught orthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, earning the affection and respect of colleagues and students. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Dental Association and was inducted as a Fellow of The American College of Dentistry. He was also a lifetime member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the Tweed International Foundation for Orthodontic Research.

He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After he finished his tour, he carried with him a strong lifetime spirit of patriotism and respect for military service. He loved playing tennis and was a fierce competitor and trophy winner of numerous tournaments. Most notable was his Gold Medal in the Senior Olympics. He was a Life Deacon at Trinity Baptist Church. He and the love of his life, Lupita, were married for 61 years.

Dr. Barnes is survived by his children Marilu Garza, James Jr. (partner Laurel Stuckey), and Dr. Glory Barnes (Col. Stephen) Marshall; grandchildren Melisa (Andrew) Olsen, Mamie Kathryn (Cameron) Horton, and 2Lt. James Bailey Marshall; great-grandchildren Summer Olsen, Luke Olsen, and Hallie Horton; and many nieces and nephews. (Legacy.com)

DR. ELLIS RUSSELL VAN DYKE, ORTHODONTICS CLASS OF 1954

Dr. Ellis Russell Van Dyke passed away on March 9, 2012, at the age of 94. He cherished his association with Dr. Alton Moore and others at the School. (No further details were available.)
