Course Description

Should your dental practice be on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Google+? Yes!

Your patients and prospective patients are using these sites, and social media can help you connect and engage with them. You have valuable health information, and can use social media to continue your patients’ oral health education outside the office.

From a traditional marketing standpoint, social media has the ability to improve the search engine placement of a dental practice’s web presence. If a potential patient were to use a search engine to search for dentists in a particular geographic area, the clinician with the largest web presence would be the first return in the search results. Therefore, a clinician with a practice website, a Facebook page, a Twitter handle, a blog, and a YouTube channel would be high up on the list. The more active the clinician is on these websites, the higher he or she will climb.

This course will provide an overview of the most popular social media applications and best practices for using each one. Specific social media tools will be addressed, with suggestions on how it can be utilized in a professional and educational way. Social media platforms that will be discussed are Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and LinkedIn. A tutorial will be provided on each application discussed.

Morning Foundational Focus: Margie will walk you through setting up each account (Facebook page, Twitter, G+, LinkedIn, etc.), discuss each application and explain why and when to use them, plus the security and privacy concerns, etc., for each.

Afternoon Intermediate Focus: Margie will discuss best practices and walk you through signing up and using a few 3rd party applications to make your postings quick and easy. Marketing gems will be included along the way.

Instructor

Margie Arnett, is an Assistant Professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, where she also teaches social media marketing to the graduating dentists. She obtained her degree in Kinesiology from California State University Fullerton. Margie administers a variety of Facebook and Twitter business pages, in addition to non-profit organizations. She was the 2013 keynote speaker at the Association of Dental Educators of Europe. She also presented two workshops at the American Dental Education Association’s 2012 annual scientific session on, “Using Social Media as a Dental Educator”.

Margie’s research is focused on tobacco, social media and public health dentistry. She is published in the Journal of Dental Education. She has presented research at the American Dental Education Association, Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, and the National Conference on Tobacco and Health. She was honored by the California State Assembly as a Woman of Distinction in 2013.

Margie is owned by 9 furkids: 3 horses, 4 dogs, 1 kitty and 1 parrot.
