Dental Radiology Service

The Dental Radiology Service at the University of Washington School of Dentistry in Seattle provides production and interpretation of radiographic images.

Dental radiology is the specialty of dentistry and discipline of radiology concerned with the production and interpretation of radiographic images, including CT and MRI scans that are used for the diagnosis and management of diseases, disorders and conditions of the mouth, face and jaws.

An oral and maxillofacial radiologist is a dentist who studies and interprets radiographic images for conditions affecting the head, neck, face and jaws. To become an OMR, a dentist must complete a residency from an American Dental Association accredited program. This training includes thorough knowledge on techniques and interpretation of maxillofacial CT, CBCT, MRI, ultrasound and other pertinent modalities.

Dr. Johan Aps, Radiologist

Dr. Johan Aps obtained his DDS degree at the Ghent University in Belgium (1993), as well as his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and Special Care (1997), and his PhD (2002). In 2008 he obtained a Masters in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of London, Great Britain.

From 1993 till 2004 he was part-time private practitioner and faculty at the Ghent University, Dental School. Between 2004 and 2012 he was a full-time faculty at that same University. In July 2012 he joined the University of Washington, where he became Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in January 2014.

He is author of several peer-reviewed papers, conference abstracts, book chapters and is reviewer and co-editor for dental journals and editor-in-chief of a Dutch-Belgian dental text book. He is also the recipient of 5 scientific awards.
