Scope of Practice
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty of medicine and dentistry focused on the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the face and jaws. Our distinguished faculty are trained to treat trauma, congenital and acquired defects and disorders, facial infections, cancers of the head and neck region, as well as to perform extractions and placement of dental implants.

Thomas B. Dodson, DMD, MPH, Chair
Dr. Thomas Dodson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Formerly Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Dodson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Dodson is Chief of Service at University Hospital and practices the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
O. Ross Beirne, DMD, PhD
Dr. Ross Beirne is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Beirne is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
John Richard Evans, DDS
Dr. John Evans is Assistant Professor of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Evans is Director of Undergraduate Education for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. He is an attending surgeon at Group Health Cooperative, Harborview Medical Center, University Hospital, University of Washington, Children’s Orthopedic Hospital and Seattle Veteran’s Administration Hospital. He holds a Washington dental license as well as a general anesthesia, deep sedation permit.
