Xu (Sue) Qian

Dr. Xu (Sue) Qian is a Diplomate of American Board of Orthodontics (Board-Certified orthodontist). She earned her DDS and completed her orthodontic residency with a MS at West China School of Dentistry, Sichuan University. She completed her second 3-year orthodontic residency with a specialty certificate in Orthodontics at UCLA School of Dentistry. She completed her PhD in Oral Health Sciences at School of Dentistry, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Dr. Qian has been specialized in Orthodontics since 2005. She was a full-time faculty teaching orthodontic residents and treating patients at Tufts University, Boston before relocating to Seattle with her husband who is a software engineer and their two young kids. She has been invited as a peer-reviewer for over 10 academic journals and has been recognized as a top reviewer for continuous years by American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO). She lectured nationally/internationally and published her studies in journals such as Journal of Dental Research, Biomaterials and Stem Cells. Dr. Qian teaches part-time in the UW Graduate Orthodontics Clinic and seminars. She practices in north Seattle metro area.

 

Lauren Todoki

Background

Dr. Lauren Todoki teaches the graduate student seminar and clinic on Friday mornings. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Southern California earning degrees in Biology and East Asian Languages and Cultures. Dr. Todoki attended dental school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery. She completed her orthodontic training and Master of Science in Dentistry at the University of Washington. Dr. Todoki is a board-certified orthodontist and practices in Renton, WA.

Samuel Finkleman

Dr. Finkleman received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery and Master of Science in Dentistry and Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Washington. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Fellow-Elect of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Dr. Finkleman currently teaches in the Graduate Orthodontics Clinic on Monday mornings.

Jacqueline de Leon-Estes

Dr. de Leon-Estes teaches orthodontic residents on Wednesday afternoons. She received her orthodontic certificate and Master of Science in Dentistry at the University of Minnesota in 2000. Dr. de Leon-Estes has practiced orthodontics in Mukilteo, WA since 2003. She serves on several school and community boards and has been involved in local and international outreach programs.

Sepi Torkan

Background

Dr. Sepi Torkan is an affiliate assistant professor, teaching graduate students on Wednesday afternoons. She completed her dental school at IUMS and then moved to Seattle and completed her orthodontic training as well as Master of science in Dentistry at the University of Washington. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Torkan has published several peer-reviewed papers and is a reviewer for several prestigious orthodontic journals. Dr. Torkan practices in Redmond, WA.

Tarisai C. Dandajena

While born in Zimbabwe, Dr. Dandajena is travelled widely with experiences spanning three continents (Africa, Europe and North America) and five countries (Zimbabwe, Greece, Denmark, USA and South Africa). He received his dental degree from the University of Aristotle in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1995, Master of Science degree and specialty certificate in Orthodontics in 2001, and PhD in Cell Biology in 2005. After serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa, he relocated to Seattle where he maintains a private practice. Dr. Dandajena is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is a military graduate of the Military School for Officer Corps, Greece (1995) and retired at the rank of Captain from the Zimbabwe National Army. He has previously served as the Chief Dental Officer for the Zimbabwe National Army.

Camelia Espahbod

Background

Dr. Espahbod is a Board Certified orthodontist. She received her dental degree from Bogomolets National Medical University in Kiev, Ukraine in 1998 and her MSD in Oral Medicine from University of Washington in 2004. Dr. Espahbod practiced general dentistry for 7 years in the Seattle area and maintained an established dental practice.  She then completed a 3-year orthodontic program at New York University where she received a Certificate in Orthodontics in 2014. Dr. Espahbod practices orthodontics in multiple clinics, both private and low-income.  She closely follows evidence-based orthodontic principles in her work.  Dr. Espahbod is fluent in Russian and Farsi.

Soojin Kim

Dr. Soojin Kim received her dental degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1998, Certificate of Prosthodontics in 2001 from the University of California, San Francisco and her MSD and Certificate of Orthodontics from the University of Washington in 2005. She practices in south Seattle.

Reid J. Winkler

Background

Dr. Winkler currently teaches in the Graduate Clinic and seminar on Thursday mornings. He received his Bachelors degree from Bowdoin College in 1994, his DDS from the University of Washington in 1998 and his MSD and Certificate in Orthodontics also from UW in 2006. After 12 years in the U.S. Navy as both a general dentist and orthodontist, Dr. Winkler left military service in 2010 to join Dr. Peter Shapiro as a partner in private practice in the University Village area of Seattle. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and has served on the board of the Washington State Society of Orthodontists.

Gregory Vaughn

Background

Dr. Vaughn received his DDS from the University of the Pacific (San Francisco) in 1999 and his Certificate in Orthodontics in 2001 from UCLA. Greg also maintains his private practice in Lower Queen Anne & Madison Park (Seattle) with his wife Paola Leone.

Allan L. Van Ness

Background

Dr. Van Ness received his DDS in 1966 from the University of Washington and his MSD in Orthodontics in 1973 from the same institution. His area of research was in Primate Center Growth Studies. He retired in 2008 from practices in Bothell and Monroe and currently teaches residents in seminars and clinical settings.

David L. Turpin

Background

Dr. Turpin is the current Moore-Riedel Professor in the UW Department of Orthodontics, is a graduate of the Universities of Iowa (DDS) and Washington (MSD), and has been on the UW faculty since 1971. He is also currently Editor Emeritus of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) and is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO). As such, he continues to be interested in a number of ongoing research studies that may lead to the improvement of patient care.

Barbara L. Sheller

Background

Dr. Sheller graduated with honors from the UW School of Dentistry in 1981. She completed the graduate program here in 1987, receiving an MSD and a Certificate in Orthodontics. She joined the faculty of Pediatric Dentistry in 1982 and has a joint appointment in Orthodontics since 1987. She is a staff orthodontist and pediatric dentist at Children’s Hospital.

Soleil D. Roberts

Background

Dr. Roberts is a Board Certified orthodontist with advanced training in Cleft and Craniofacial Orthodontics. She received her undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry from the University of Washington in 2014. She then completed an 18-month fellowship in Craniofacial Orthodontics at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She is currently in private practice in Woodinville, WA, and is affiliated with the Puget Sound Cleft Lip and Palate Team. Her research, teaching, and lecturing focuses on pediatric sleep apnea and advances in craniofacial care.

Christopher S. Riolo

Background

Dr. Riolo obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan. He has a Specialty Certificate and a Masters of Science degree in Orthodontics from University of Detroit Mercy. Upon completion of his specialty training Dr. Riolo decided to continue his education at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, where he received a PhD in Epidemiology. Dr. Riolo is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and maintains a private practice in Seattle.

Perry Ormiston

Background

Dr. Ormiston graduated from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, and received his Certificate in Orthodontics and his MSD from the University of Washington. He is an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at UW and maintains a private practice in Puyallup and Eatonville.

Mariana Muguerza

Background

Dr. Muguerza grew up in Venezuela where she earned her dental degree from Universidad Santa Maria in 2010. She worked as a general dentist and taught dentistry before moving to Seattle. She received her Master of Science in Dentistry with Certificate in Orthodontics by the University of Washington in 2016. Dr. Muguerza currently practices in the Tacoma area.

John W. Moore

Background

Dr. Moore is a graduate of the UW in dentistry and orthodontics, completing the program in 1979. Currently on the affiliated faculty of the Department, he shares responsibility for the interdisciplinary orthodontics program. He maintains a private practice in Seattle and is a Diplomate of the ABO.

Paola Leone

Background

Dr. Leone received her DDS from the University of Bari (Italy) in 1997 and her MSD in 2002 from St. Louis University. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor, co-directing the pre-doctoral orthodontic program. Paola also maintains her private practice in Lower Queen Anne (Seattle) with her husband Greg.

Samuel L. Lake

Background

Dr. Lake graduated from the UW School of Dentistry in 1979 and was awarded a MSD and Certificate by the UW Ortho program in 1981. He is an Affiliate Professor at the UW and is a Diplomate of the ABO. Dr. Lake teaches part-time in the Graduate Orthodontics Clinic and seminars, with a particular interest in surgical orthodontics and practice management.

Vincent O. Kokich

Background

Dr. Kokich received his dental degree from Tufts University and his masters in Orthodontics from the University of Washington. His current research and publications are primarily involved with esthetic, interdisciplinary dentistry. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists, and a member of the Angle Society and American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Dr. Kokich, Jr. lectures nationally and internationally on interdisciplinary dentistry and dental esthetics emphasizing comprehensive treatment planning and the importance of properly sequencing orthodontic, periodontal, and restorative treatment. He is in private orthodontic practice in Tacoma, Washington.

Doug J. Knight

Background

Douglas J. Knight received his dental degree from the University of Washington, as well as his masters in Orthodontics. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists, a member of the Angle Society and the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. His primary interest is in interdisciplinary coordination of care for the adolescent and adult patient. Dr. Knight lectures nationally and internationally on interdisciplinary dentistry and dental esthetics. He also maintains a private orthodontic practice in Tacoma, Washington.

Hitesh Kapadia

Background

Dr. Kapadia completed his DDS and residency training in Orthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center- Houston. He received a PhD in the areas of Human and Molecular Genetics/ Genes and Development at The University of Texas – Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He was then on faculty at Baylor College of Dentistry. He subsequently completed fellowship training in Craniofacial Orthodontics at New York University Medical Center, Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. He has been at Seattle Children’s Hospital – Craniofacial Center since 2010 and is program director of the fellowship program in Craniofacial Orthodontics.

Richard T. Jones

Dr. Jones teaches at the University of Washington Orthodontics Clinic. He is certified with and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Jones is also a member of the Edward H. Angle Society, a national study club of orthodontists committed to excellence, ethics and professionalism.

John C. Ive

Background

Dr. Ive graduated from the UW in dentistry as well as in orthodontics in 1979. He is now an affiliate instructor in the Department and shares responsibility for the adult orthodontics program. He maintains a private practice and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Jack Hou

Background

Dr. Hou is an Affiliate Assistant Professor, teaching the first year residents an introduction to wire bending course and he is also a fellow and instructor at the International Tweed Foundation in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Jack Hou attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. He completed dental school, graduating with his Doctorate of Dental Surgery, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he was also inducted into the Omega Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. To complete his orthodontic training, Dr. Hou attended the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN, earning his Master of Dental Science and Orthodontic Certificate. Dr. Hou and his wife, Dr. Frederick, practice together in West Seattle, Tukwila and Renton, WA.

Stanton H. Hall

Background

Dr. Hall received his DDS and MS in Oral Pathology from Northwestern University in 1967. He completed a PhD in Experimental Pathology at the UW and spent three years in research at NIH before entering the orthodontics program here. An ABO Diplomate, he has been on the orthodontics faculty since 1979, serves as associate staff of the UW Medical Center, and maintains a private practice.

Kortne Frederick

Background

Dr. Frederick is an Affiliate Assistant Professor, teaching the first year orthodontic residents an introduction to wire bending course and she is also a fellow and instructor at the International Tweed Foundation in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Kortne Frederick completed her undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in General Biology while working as a barista and skiing for the U of M ski team. Dr. Frederick attended dental school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and graduated with her Doctorate of Dental Surgery. Her orthodontic training was completed at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN, where she earned her Master of Dental Science and Orthodontic Certificate. Dr. Frederick and her husband, Dr. Hou, practice together in West Seattle, Tukwila and Renton, WA.

Brett C. Fidler

Background

Dr. Fidler received his DDS from the University of Washington in 1975. He practiced general dentistry for 15 years prior to returning to the University of Washington to earn his MSD and Certificate of Proficiency in Orthodontics in 1992. Dr Fidler is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and maintains a private practice in Bellevue, WA.

Mike R. Fey

Background

Dr. Fey received his degree in Pharmacy in 1971 and DDS from the UW in 1975 and a combined pediatric dentistry and Orthodontics in 1978.

Research

His area of research is in Cephalometric Analysis in Down Syndrome. Currently, he is helping to set up the first dental school in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Ross J. Drangsholt

Background

Dr. Drangsholt graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1992 and completed his MSD and Certificate of Proficiency in Orthodontics in 1997 from the same institution. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and a member of the Northwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society. Dr. Drangsholt is in private practice in Lakewood, Washington.

Bobby Cohanim

Background

Dr. Cohanim received his DDS in 1988, his Orthodontics Certificate in 1990 and his MS in Craniofacial Biology in 1991, all from the University of Southern California. In 1995 he returned to the Seattle area, now maintaining a private practice in Seattle. Dr. Cohanim is an Affiliate Professor at the UW and teaches part-time in the graduate orthodontic program.

Jeremy Chaison

Background

Dr. Chaison is an Affiliate Assistant Professor, teaching the graduate student seminar and clinic on Thursday mornings. He completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 with a BA in History with a General Honors certificate. Dr. Chaison then moved to Seattle, where he completed his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 2006 and his Master of Science in Dentistry with Certificate of Orthodontics in 2008. He has maintained a private practice in Bothell since 2011.

Irena M. Baker

Background

Dr. Baker received her DDS from the University of Zagreb in 1980 and her Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Louisville in 1983. She taught full-time in Orthodontics at the University of Louisville for eight years before moving to Seattle in 1992. Dr. Baker now teaches orthodontic graduate students part-time and maintains a full-time private practice. She also served as President of the Washington State Society of Orthodontists.

Holly McIver

Background

Dr. McIver received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2006, graduating cum laude with dual majors in Science-Business and Spanish. She earned her DDS and MSD in 2010 and 2012 respectively, from the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Dentistry in Houston, where she also later served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics for two years. Dr. McIver is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. She recently moved to Bainbridge Island with her family from Texas, after selling her private practice of 4 years. She is currently an Affiliate Assistant Professor covering the weekly interdisciplinary seminar and clinic.
