The Oral Medicine Service at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center provides supportive care for individuals before, during, and after cancer therapy.
Services
The Oral Medicine service routinely evaluates patients for oral and dental problems prior to transplant to minimize the risk for potentially life-threatening post-transplant infections and helps to manage post-transplant complications including Graft-versus-Host disease (GVHD). Our oral medicine specialists also regularly work with Fred Hutch patients outside of the transplant service referred for assessment of oral soft tissue lesions, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), dental infections, or other orofacial issues.
Before Your Appointment
The Fred Hutch Oral Medicine Service strongly encourages patients arriving for transplant to see their dentist before arriving to Seattle. The dentist should perform a thorough examination to detect cavities, periodontal disease, and other problems. Ideally, these issues should be treated and healed before the patient arrives for treatment as the mouth can be a source of infection following transplantation.

About the Clinic
The Fred Hutch Oral Medicine Service represents the first oral oncology service in the world. The service is primarily associated with the world-renowned Bone and Marrow Transplant program, which completed the world’s first successful bone marrow transplant in 1959. The Oral Medicine service was established by Dr. Mark Schubert in 1975 to provide oral care that is essential to the transplant process.
