Background
Dr. Hairfield received his DDS from the UW in 1980, a MS in Bioengineering and Mathematics from UNC in 1986, and MSD in Orthodontics from here in 1992. Other experiences included a 2 year GPR at NC Memorial Hospital-Chapel Hill, a 1 year Craniofacial and Communicative-Disorders Fellowship at the UNC Dental Research Center, and funding from a NIH Physician-Scientist Award received in 1984. This award enabled him to complete the doctoral program in Bioengineering and Mathematics in the School of Medicine while studying upper airway health and speech behaviors in cleft lip and palate individuals. This opportunity also enabled him to author or co-author over 20 articles and 2 book chapters, which have been cited over 500 times in referred scientific and clinical journals. He has been in private practice since 1992 and teaches biomechanics part-time.
