Description
The Oral Medicine observational externship is a non-credited three-day or one-week externship program within the University of Washington, Department of Oral Medicine. This program is primarily for colleagues who wish to learn about Oral Medicine. The University of Washington has a world-renowned faculty, in clinical experience and research.
The one-week program is designed to allow the extern to develop an appreciation and understanding of advanced oral medicine curriculum and practice. Experiences include attending seminars, sitting in on academic courses, and observing clinical care of oral medicine patients. The oral medicine clinic at the University of Washington includes patients with oral mucosal disease, salivary gland disorders, orofacial pain, neurosensory disturbances, and movement disorders. Additional experiences are arranged in the Oral Radiology service, colleagues whom we collaborate with to provide exceptional patient care. This may include observing interpretation of images including CBCT, panoramic radiographs and intraoral radiographs with the Oral Radiology Residents and faculty. A half-day observation can also be arranged in the Dental Education in Care of Persons with Disabilities (DECOD) clinic for those that are interested.
Academic credit is not awarded for the externship, but after successful completion, the extern will receive a “certificate of completion” from the department of Oral Medicine.
Rotations in radiology and DECOD would be pending approval by the oral radiology division and/or DECOD.
In select circumstances, externships may be arranged for a shorter time and the cost will be prorated.
*Please be aware that we are unable to obtain or sponsor Visas for international applicants currently. The applicant will be responsible for obtaining their own Visa.
Cost
- Three-day fee: $1000
- One-week fee: $2,000
- Fee is waived for individuals enrolled in a CODA approved dental program or US undergraduate education:
Application and Selection Process
A letter of interest or email correspondence from the applicant is sufficient in order to initiate the application process. Once the coordinator or director has verified that there is a space available, please fill out the Online Application Form and follow the directions for submission on the application. The director and faculty of the Oral Medicine Graduate Program will review the letters of interest. The observational externship can be customized based on the goals of the attendee.
This is an elective non-credit program with no formal language proficiency requirement; however, the externship applicant should have a working knowledge of English. After application materials have been received and reviewed, a phone interview with the Program Director/faculty will be required before admittance in order to assess language proficiency. The interview will confirm the dates of attendance requested by the applicant, and will clarify the applicant’s goals and expectations for the observational externship during their visit to the University of Washington.
