Course Overview

This course provides 2nd year dental students with a 4-week immersion in aspects of patient care and support functions of a dental practice (practice management) at the UW School of Dentistry. This will prepare them for independent patient care during their subsequent clinical training

Learning Objectives

The student who successfully completes this course will be able to:

  1. Describe basics principles of optimal patient flow in the care of dental patients
  2. Demonstrate basic dental assisting functions including operatory set up and break down and effective four handed instrument exchange
  3. Perform basic dental procedures such as oral injections, and rubber dam placement
  4. Describe fundamentals of dental billing, coding, patient record documentation and compliance regulations
  5. Perform infection control and waste management procedures in accordance with state and federal guidelines
