Course Overview

In this course, students will learn the basic principles of the designs of removable partial dentures. The course is comprised of a series of lectures and laboratory exercises. The objective of this course is for students to be able to design RPDs for partially edentulous patients, which should be acceptable from physiological and mechanical viewpoints. An overall goal of this course is to ensure that students possess the knowledge, skills and values to begin the practice of general dentistry. Students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills that they learn in this course to the following Removable Prosthodontics courses.

Learning Objectives

The student who successfully completes this course will be able to:

  1. Describe and identify the Kennedy classification of partially edentulous arches
  2. Describe the pros and cons of removable partial dentures vs other type of prostheses
  3. Define the indications and contraindications of removable partial dentures
  4. Describe the major components of removable partial dentures
  5. Understand the clinical work flow of removable partial dentures
  6. Describe the indications and contraindications of major components of removable partial dentures
  7. Understand basic principles of removable partial denture designs
  8. Describe and demonstrate the ability to design basic types of removable partial dentures
