Fixed Prosthodontics 3

Course Director: Xavier Lepe
Credits: 2
Quarters/Yr of Program: Spring / 2

Course Overview

This course is the third in a three-course sequence of Preclinical Fixed Prosthodontics.  The didactic course and laboratory exercises emphasize the esthetic aspects of the restoration of individual or multiple unit prostheses. Greater ability in planning and critical thinking is expected compared to the previous two courses. Several guest lecturers introduce the students to the concept of continuing education. An introduction to a critical evaluation of the dental literature is presented with examples of evidence-based decisions regarding treatment planning in fixed prosthodontics. The lecture content of this course attempts to integrate the disciplines of Fixed Prosthodontics and Periodontics as well as to connect Laboratory and Clinical Fixed Prosthodontics course content with Material Science Information.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Properly prepare teeth for various esthetic veneer crown designs
2. Properly fabricate two single unit composite provisional restorations using different external surface forms
3. Define the procedures and design for a resin-bonded ultraconservative fixed prosthesis
4. Properly design and wax an anterior resin-bonded ultraconservative fixed prosthesis
5. Define the procedures and design for an anterior porcelain fused to metal fixed prosthesis
6. Properly prepare teeth for an anterior porcelain fused to metal fixed prosthesis then fabricate a provisional resin fixed prosthesis using PMMA
7. Describe and demonstrate the use dental materials used in making a final PVS impression, making a working cast and dies using a type IV die stone, mounting casts on a Panadent semi-adjustable articulator using plaster, waxing two single crowns and a conventional anterior fixed prosthesis to complete contour then cutting-back the wax for porcelain on a select number of these wax patterns
8. Define the procedures associated with the application of porcelain to a metal framework, porcelain glazing and polishing procedures as well as porcelain characterization and the use of extrinsic colorants and as an optional project invest and cast a single PFM crown wax pattern, finish the casting and apply porcelain
9. Diagnose and plan an anterior tooth esthetics case with treatment to include both Periodontal and Restorative procedures
