Course Description

The presentation is designed to give dentists and hygienists who administer local anesthesia an update on some newer concepts including buffering agents, intranasal tetracaine and long-acting injectables. The second portion of the presentation will discuss various clinical dilemmas and useful pearls that practitioners typically encounter in everyday practice.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this class, you will be able to:

  • Review selected new concepts and newer agents related to local anesthesia in dental practice, including:
    • Buffering agents
    • Intranasal tetracaine
    • Long acting injectables (Exparel)
  • Identify useful clinical correlates (“pearls”) related to local anesthesia use
  • Analyze some common clinical dilemmas and troubleshooting scenarios

Instructor

Dr. Dean LeDukeDean LeDuke is a graduate of St Michael’s College (B.A.), Columbia University (D.D.S.), and Clarkson University (M.B.A.). He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and a fellowship at East Grinstead Hospital in Sussex, England. Dr. DeLuke is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American and the International College of Dentists.

He is currently Affiliate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at VCU School of Dentistry. He was twice elected ADEA Specialty Professor of the Year, an award conferred by the student body at VCU, and is the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Didactic Teaching. He is also the recipient of the Daniel M. Laskin Award for Excellence in Predoctoral Education, a national award conferred by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).

Prior to coming to Virginia Commonwealth University, he was a partner in a multispecialty group in upstate New York, and he was also Chief of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at St. Clare’s Hospital. He is a past president of the New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and has served in the AAOMS House of Delegates.

Dr. DeLuke was also active for many years on the Advisory Board, Risk Management and Finance Committees of OMS National Insurance Company. He authored a text on Syndromes of the Head and Neck, along with numerous other journal articles and book chapters. He has been a frequent lecturer at regional and national meetings for the past 30 years.
