Lecture Description

We will discuss important ways to prepare your team for any urgent scenario in the dental office, including the development of an effective emergency kit. We will also introduce the use of a free cognitive aid called Ten Minutes Saves A Life! that can be a lifesaving tool. Finally, we will learn how to recognize and manage common emergencies.

Course Objectives:

As a result of attending this lecture you will be able to:

  • Discuss office preparation and the 6 important features of an emergency kit.
  • Identify strategies to practice urgent scenarios with your team.
  • Recognize and improve management of common sedation complications.
  • Decide how to incorporate and recognize the importance of cognitive aids.

Instructor

Dr. Andrea FonnerDr. Andrea Fonner completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Washington in 2001 and her dental degree at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2004. She then completed a General Practice Residency at the University of Washington Medical Center and a Dental Anesthesiology residency at the University of California Los Angeles. She has maintained a mobile anesthesia practice in the Bellevue/Seattle area for 14 years. Dr. Fonner is a Diplomate, Examiner and current President of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology (ADBA) and has served as the President and Delegate for the Washington Dental Society of Anesthesiology (WDSA) for 11 years. Her passion is teaching dentists around with world about ways to improve patient safety. She was the co-creator of the ADSA Ten Minutes Saves a Life!® emergency application and manual, which is the only cognitive aid that exists for dentistry and is used all around the world. She is the Co-Director for a ADSA High-Fidelity Human Simulation course and the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry Parenteral Moderate Sedation course. She currently serves on the Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL) Anesthesiology Committee for the American Dental Association (ADA). The best part of each day is spending time with her 10-year-old identical twins, Lauren and Charlotte, and husband, Matt, who works as a professional golfer.
