Course Description

It is critical for clinicians to be able to appropriately distinguish benign from malignant oral diseases, but even the most frequently seen conditions in oral pathology may be diagnostically challenging for clinicians who do not encounter them regularly. This presentation will help in the identification of both common innocuous and the more clinically significant lesions, including atypical presentations that vary from classic textbook pictures.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

– Clinically distinguish common benign reactive, immune-mediated, and infectious disorders of the oral  mucosa from malignant and pre-malignant lesions
– Formulate reasonable differentials based on clinical presentations and histories
– Assess when patients are best served with referral to specialists, or when they may be managed locally with immune-suppressive medications or antimicrobial agents

Instructor

Dr. Mark Lerman is the Division Director of Oral Pathology and Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He is appointed as a Professor and divides his time between teaching, clinical practice, and the school’s biopsy service.

Dr. Lerman earned both his B.A. in history and D.M.D from Tufts University. After completing a general practice residency in dentistry at Harvard University and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he trained in oral and maxillofacial pathology at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens in New York City. He was on the faculty for eight years at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor, before returning to his alma mater in 2014. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and he has authored multiple articles in the peer-reviewed oral pathology literature.
