Course Description
HIV infection is a worldwide epidemic cutting through barriers of race, gender and age. Approximately 1.2million patients currently are affected by this infection in the United States alone. This course will focus on the etiology, transmission, oral manifestations and management of a HIV infected patient. Medical and dental considerations when performing procedures on a HIV infected dental patient will be discussed. Application of the principles of infection control in protection of the dental health care professional and the patient will be emphasized. Post-exposure prophylaxis of occupational injury while treating a HIV patient and currently available treatment will be discussed.
Course Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the etiology, signs, and symptoms of HIV/AIDS.
- Understand current dental treatment procedures and protocols in the care of a HIV patient.
- Recognize drugs used in treatment of HIV/AIDS.
- Discuss infection control procedures.
- Implement precautions to avoid occupational injury, and in case of injury, then understand the need and administration of post exposure prophylaxis.
Instructor
Rama Kiran Chavali is a full-time Associate Professor at the UAB School of Dentistry. After graduating dental school from the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India he moved to the United States in 2002. He completed both his Masters in Biomaterials (2005) and Graduate Prosthodontics residency (2009) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has been actively involved in teaching dental biomaterials, fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics at the pre-clinical and clinical level for over 16 years at UAB. He is the Co-director for the UAB International Dentist Program, and pre-doctoral director for D3 and D4 removable partial prosthodontics and Implants. He maintains an active faculty practice at the school of dentistry.
