Course Description

Occlusion plays a crucial role in achieving long-term success of dental treatments. One of the major clinical challenges is to understand and apply occlusal concepts depending on the planned prosthesis and various functional and esthetic elements. This lecture will present fundamental occlusal concepts in removable, fixed and implant restorations. The lecture will also address the diagnostic analysis, the decision-making process, treatment planning and prosthodontic treatment of the fixed prosthodontic rehabilitation. Finally, useful clinical tips will be shared to overcome common clinical challenges related to occlusion.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this course you should be able to:

  • Describe foundational occlusal concepts applied in removable, fixed and implant restorations
  • Outline the clinical guidelines of optimal occlusion and its applications in clinical situations
  • Perform occlusal adjustments (ex. occlusal appliance)

Instructor

Sang J. LeeSang J. Lee is Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs and serves in the role of Medical Director of the Harvard Dental Center (HDC). He practices in Longwood and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He directs all student- and patient-related clinical activities in the Harvard Dental Center Teaching Practices and oversees daily clinical operations to ensure the highest excellence in standards of care and quality assurance. Prior to taking on this role, Dr. Lee served as Director of Advanced Graduate Education (AGE) at HSDM, where he was responsible for overseeing 14 advanced graduate training programs and leading the Committee on Advanced Graduate Education (CAGE). He was also the Director of the AGE Prosthodontics program. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and serves as Fellow of many organizations including the American College of Prosthodontists, the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics, and the American Academy of Dental Science. He has served as a site visitor for the Advanced Dental Program in the Committee on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and as a Review Committee member for the Advanced Dental Program in Prosthodontics.

Dr. Lee received his BS from Bucknell University and his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He completed his advanced graduate training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, receiving a Masters of Medical Science (MMSc) degree in oral biology, a Certificate in Prosthodontics and a Certificate in Implant Dentistry.
