Course Description

Dental patients may present with complex medical history of past and current illnesses which may impact delivery of dental care. This course will describe the importance of taking a thorough medical history and how it may impact dental therapy, alter treatment plans and perhaps even avoid medical emergencies.It will allow the dental healthcare provider to understand past and current disease states, current medications the patient may be taking and their effect on treatment strategies for their patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of taking a detailed and thorough medical history.
  • Describe the essential components of a medical history.
  • Explore strategies for successful patient interviews.
  • Discuss detailed review of systemic diseases.
  • Discuss and elaborate connections between systemic disease and oral health.
  • Review common medications and treatments the dental patient may present with

Instructor

Dr. Natoosha NargaskiDr. Natoosha Nargaski is an Assistant Professor and the Coordinator of the Graduate Orthodontics Clinic at the University of Toronto. She is also the president of the Ontario Association of Orthodontists. She has earned an (Hon)BSc degree in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus and earned both her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and her MSc specialty in Orthodontics from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry. She did a GPR at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and is dually licensed to practice in both Ontario and Connecticut, where she practiced after her specialty training and before returning to Toronto. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and is a member of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists and the Ontario Association of Orthodontists.
