Course Description

This course aims to inform dental practitioners of an emerging alternative treatment to pulpectomies and extractions for non-vital primary teeth called lesion sterilization and tissue repair (LSTR). LSTR is a non-instrumentation endodontic treatment that involves a tri-antibiotic mixture in a propylene glycol vehicle, which is used to disinfect root canal systems.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this class, you will be able to:

  • Understand the origins of the development of the Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair (LSTR) technique.
  • Understand the foundational research on which the LSTR Technique is based
  • Understand the selection criteria for application of the LSTR Technique.
  • Understand the LSTR technique to treat infected primary teeth.

Instructor

Dr. Brian HodgsonBrian Hodgson received his dental degree from Marquette University in 1987 and a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in 1993. He became Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) in 2001 and served on the Oral Clinical Examination Committee for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry until his appointment to the Board of Directors of the ABPD in May 2021. Dr. Hodgson has been an instructor in the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at Children’s Wisconsin since July 1993 and joined the faculty at Marquette University School of Dentistry in March 2003. He also provides hospital dental services to healthy children and children and adults with special health care needs. His clinical research has been focused on the prevention and treatment of cancer therapy-related oral mucositis, but also investigates oral health-related findings in patients with special health care needs. He previously maintained a private practice in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin from May 1996 through September 2013, and recently retired after a 32-year career in the US Navy Dental Corps.
