Course Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the world to face a new normal. Delivery of health care has been significantly impacted as a result of SARS-CoV-2 emergence. This seminar will provide an update on COVID-19 along with discussion of other occupational respiratory and bloodborne infection risks for dental health-care professionals. Reinforcement of standard precautions and health care worker vaccines will be emphasized as major components of effective infection prevention, as well as transmission precautions necessitated by aerosolized microbial challenges. Current information pertaining to personal protective equipment (PPE) protection and air quality modifications for dentistry will also be discussed in light of the most recent CDC, ADA, NIOSH, and OSHA recommendations. Hand hygiene, vaccine updates, and other preventive measures (e.g., instrument reprocessing, disinfection, and dental water asepsis) provide additional frameworks for this presentation. When considered together, infectious disease challenges and prevention strategies will be used to reinforce the application of standard precautions during patient treatment. The most recent evidence-based information is also discussed to address certain issues where perceptions and misuse of infection control procedures and products are in conflict with scientific and clinical knowledge.

Instructor
John Molinari is Professor Emeritus at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, where he served for 32 years as Chairman of Biomedical Sciences and Director of Infection Control. He has also been Director of Infection Control at The Dental Advisor in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his laboratory was involved in research studying new infection control technologies and products. He has published over 500 scientific articles, reports, and chapters in the areas of microbiology and immunology, and lectures nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and infection control. Dr. Molinari is also co-author of the text Cottone’s Practical Infection Control in Dentistry.
Registration
Simply register online. You will be directed to UW CDE’s secure online registration. Register for “Infection Control, Emerging Infectious Diseases, and Vaccines Update”. You will receive an emailed confirmation letter with a link to the video. An online exam will be sent upon viewing the whole video. Once you have passed the exam, UW CDE will email you a certificate of completion certificate will be emailed to you automatically. You will have until June 30th of the current CDE course year (September – June) to complete the training.
- If you do not complete the training by June 30th of the current CDE course year (September – June), you will have to sign up for the course again. No refunds will be given for online courses.

Please note that per WAC 246-817-440-4bi, while there is no longer a limit to the number of hours Washington State dentists may take for continuing education provided online, please note that for pre-recorded or other forms of non-live presentations where there is not an instructor presenting in real-time and able to respond to questions in real-time, thirty minutes will count for every one hour completed for this type of activity.
For this course, although we estimate two hours of effort, Washington State Dentists may only claim one hour of continuing dental education credit.
