Course Description
A variety of entrance examinations are given at different schools for foreign-trained dentists. Although this course will focus on the hands-on examination given by the UWIDDS admission process, the participants can use the same knowledge to understand all aspects of cavity and crown preparations. In this way you can prepare yourself for other entrance examinations given by different schools.
Our current IDDS students have told us that many of the dental materials that they are used to in their own countries are completely different here in the US. They see the need to be updated. The special dental materials lectures are designed to give you a head-start in your career. As far as we know, our dental materials review is unique and gear towards the needs of foreign-trained dentists.

- Overview of Operative Dentistry
- Computer based treatment planning exercises
Hands-on Session
- Composite and Amalgam preparations and restorations*
- Removable Partial Denture survey and design demonstration and practicing
- Wax-up designed tooth
- Full crown preparations
- *All preparations are to be done on manikin-mounted simulators or casts
DISCLAIMER
All the examinations in the regular UWIDDS process are graded anonymously. Aside from the skills that you would learn, participation in this course will in no way give you an advantage in gaining entrance to the UWIDDS program. A similar course without the lecture portion is integrated in the examination process.
Instructors
Dan Chan is Professor and Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the UW School of Dentistry. He has earned both a DMD from the University of the Philippines (1979) and a DDS from the University of Iowa (1988), as well as a Certificate and MS. He has also pursued post-graduate training at the University of Iowa as well as the University of Washington and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Albert Chung is a professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the UW School of Dentistry. Dr. Chung holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (1979) from the National Defense Medical Center-Taiwan, a Doctor of Philosophy degree (1987) in Biomaterials from the Northwestern University at Chicago, and a certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas, Health Science Center at San Antonio (2002).
