Course Description
The University of Washington’s General Dentistry Preceptorship (GDP) program offers a unique opportunity for internationally trained dentists to become familiarized with the U.S. Dental education model. UW’s GDP program provides didactic education in advanced general dentistry topics. The UW GDP program also provides mentorship to applicants for advanced standing and/or residency programs, including mock interviews and mock bench tests with grading/feedback.
Program Highlights include:
- Didactic lecture topics include fundamentals and updates on restorative dentistry including esthetic dentistry, implantology, and digital dentistry.
- Participants will have hands on practice on typodont tooth preparation, including mock typodont exams with grading and feedbacks.
- Individualized career planning/mentoring will be provided.
- Participants will obtain training in effective communications, including individualized consultation on interviews and application dossier.
- Through interacting with multiple past and current students in Advanced Standing and/or residency programs, participants will learn invaluable lessons.
- Upon completing all requirements of the program, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the UW School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education office.
- Through this GDP program, participants will not only improve knowledge and skills in general dentistry, but will be well-prepared to apply for U.S. dental education programs, such as Advanced Standing, AEGD, GPR, and specialty residency programs.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Refresh and improve didactic knowledge of all spectra of general dentistry
- Improve hands on clinical skills in a simulation lab setting
- Improve in-person interview skills
Instructors
Dr. Amy Kim is a general dentist (University of Michigan, 2001), with expertise in dental education and research. Prior to joining the University of Washington, she managed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program (pacific northwest and central west regions) of NYU Langone Hospitals. She has an extensive clinical research background, having managed programs at the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and the University of Michigan’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr Kim has served as the Co-Director of the University of Washington’s Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional education (CHSIE), and Associate Director of Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE). Her commitment to service is evidenced by her grant work, as former Principal Investigator of Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) and Early Childhood Oral Health Training (EchoTrain).
John Yae holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Washington (1987).
Dr Yae has maintained a private practice for over 33 years before joining the University of Washington as a full time Clinical Assistant Professor. He is currently Co-director of preclinical operative dentistry as well as Practice management course. He has been awarded for over 30 years of service as an Affiliate Professor and has been nominated multiple times as an outstanding faculty member. He has given multiple lectures on various dental topics both nationally and internationally.

*Refund, Cancellation and Waiting List Policy
A participant may cancel at any time. Tuition, minus a $500 processing fee, will be refunded up to two weeks before the program begins. If a cancellation occurs less than two weeks before the program begins, a refund, minus a $500 processing fee, will be given only if a replacement for the withdrawing registrant can be found by the CDE office.
We reserve the right to cancel this program if the number of attendees does not meet our minimum. The University of Washington accepts no responsibility for travel expenses or penalties incurred by course registrants in the event of course cancellation or revisions in the schedule. A complete refund will be granted to attendees if course participation is not sufficient. If the program sells out, those applications received after will be put on a waiting list in the order received. If a spot does become available, you will be notified. Those on the waiting list will be given first priority the next year. No payments will be processed unless the individual is accepted into the program.
