Course Description

The University of Washington’s General Dentistry Preceptorship (GDP) program offers a unique opportunity for internationally trained dentists to become familiarized with the U.S. Dental education model. UW’s GDP program provides didactic education in advanced general dentistry topics, along with observations in pre-doctoral clinical activities. The UW GDP program also provides mentorship to applicants for advanced standing and/or residency programs, including mock interviews and mock bench tests with grading/feedback.

Program Highlights include:

  • The program is two weeks long, short but comprehensive.
  • Didactic lecture topics include updates of all major specialties as well as implantology, esthetic dentistry and digital dentistry.
  • Participants will have hands on practice on typodont tooth preparation, including mock typodont exams with grading and feedbacks.
  • Participants will be allowed to observe pre-doctoral clinical activities on both adult and pediatric patients.
  • Individualized career planning/mentoring will be provided.
  • Participants will obtain training in effective communications, including mock interview experiences with one-on-one feedback.
  • Through interacting with multiple past and current students in Advanced Standing and/or residency programs, participants will learn invaluable lessons.
  • Upon completing the program and successfully passing a written final examination, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the UW School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education office.
  • Through this GDP program, participants will not only improve knowledge and skills in general dentistry, but will be well-prepared to apply for U.S. dental education programs, such as Advanced Standing, AEGD, GPR, and specialty residency programs.
