Course Description

This course explores dental research with direct applicability to everyday dental practice. It emphasizes the significance of clinical translational research and explains why grasping the value of such studies is crucial. Covered research topics include dentin bonding, composite materials, ceramics, digital dentistry, and bioactive materials. Through clinical examples, participants will gain insight into related research projects. Ultimately, attendees will develop an appreciation for how dental research directly influences the day-to-day operations of clinical dentistry.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain how dental research relates to dental practice.
  • Understand how research projects may offer solutions to clinical issues.
  • Discover how one research project may lead to additional projects.
  • Learn how collaboration between researchers can benefit clinical practice.

Instructor

Dr. Gerard KugelGerard Kugel is the Dean of UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, NE. Dr. Kugel is a past Associate Dean for Reseach and Professor Emeritus at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA. With an expertise in Clinical Research and Esthetic Dentistry, he is a reviewer for The New England Journal of Medicine, JADA, and The Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry, Compendium, and Inside Dentistry, where he is Editor Emeritus. He is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and the Academy of Dental Materials. Dr. Kugel has his PhD in Dental Materials, and earned his Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Dr. Kugel has published over 160 articles and over 400 abstracts in the field of restorative materials and techniques. He has given over 500 lectures both nationally and internationally. Dr Kugel practices dentistry at UNMC Faculty Practice.
