In late July 2024 the UW School of Dentistry was notified that some of its patient data may have been part of a data breach one of our vendors experienced earlier this year. Change Healthcare, or CHC, is contracted to process many of our billing statements. In February 2024 they were the victims of a ransomware attack. As per Change Healthcare’s breach report to the OCR on July 19, 2024, they identified 500 individuals as the “approximate number of individuals affected”. However, Change Healthcare is still determining the number of individuals affected.
CHC is cooperating with the FBI and the Office for Civil Rights. Beginning in late July 2024, CHC will notify individuals directly if it is determined that their data was part of the data breach.
