Class of 1996 (Dental Hygiene)

JACQUELINE JUHL, DENTAL HYGIENE CLASS OF 1996

Jacqueline JuhlJacqueline Juhl died at her home in Anacortes, Wash., on Feb. 6, 2022, surrounded by loved ones after many years of health struggles.

She was born in Tucson, Ariz., traveled the United States and the world as an Air Force child, and raised her children in Oak Harbor, Wash., before moving to Anacortes.

She attended Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) and graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in clinical nutrition. She was a college cheerleader and summered as a lifeguard on the Gulf of Mexico. When her children were older, she returned to school to earn a dental hygiene degree from Shoreline College and then completed a second BS degree in dental hygiene at the UW. She earned a double-emphasis MS degree in dental hygiene education and community and rural oral health from Idaho State University, and held two short-term fellowships in the UW’s Dental Education in the Care of Persons with Disabilities (DECOD) program. She held various leadership positions in professional associations and community health advocacy groups, and was a co-author and editor of SMART Oral Health: The Medical Management of Caries.

Juhl was a highly innovative and intuitive cook with myriad creative gifts. She was a precision seamstress, a skilled stained-glass and fused-glass artisan, a painter of walls and canvases, a doodler, a calligrapher, an adept knitter, and an avid mariner and explorer of the islands of the northern Pacific. She also was a dedicated member of any parish church she attended, serving as cantor, choir member, eucharistic minister, and supporter of adult and youth education. She waterskied and snow skied and was a SCUBA diver, camper, and parent volunteer for innumerable school field trips. Like the generations of Garcia women who came before her, she was a passionate, caring, and fierce woman.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Robert W. Juhl; children Cecily C. Hazelrigg, Stephany K. Hazelrigg, Hans and Becky Juhl, Nicholas and Courtney Juhl, Courtney and Christopher Farah, and Allison and Billy Darling; grandchildren Anya G. Hazelrigg, Yaretzi C. Hernandez Hazelrigg, Charlotte and Madeleine Juhl, Malayla A. Cunningham, Parker, Noah, and Wyatt Juhl, Charlotte and Madeleine Juhl, Laura Farah, and Leighton and Jane Darling; great-granddaughter Opal M. Hazelrigg; sisters Janis Edwards and Nan Wood; and many loving cousins and extended family throughout Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Celia Garcia Wood, and eldest sister, Virginia Foret. (Legacy.com )
