DR. FARRELL G. HINKLE, ORTHODONTICS CLASS OF 1973

Dr. Farrell HinkleDr. Farrell Gene Hinkle of Costa Mesa, Calif., and La Quinta, Calif., passed away on Sept. 29, 2019 at his home. He was 77.

He was born on June 1, 1942 in Calexico, Calif., to Albert George and Ina Maye Rhodes Hinkle. His parents were migrant farmworkers originally from Oklahoma. The family traveled from farm to farm all over California, and he worked in the fields alongside his parents and sister, Pat, until 1950, when the family settled in Rialto, Calif. After graduating from San Bernardino High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He earned an honorable discharge in 1963, and restarted his academic career.

Dr. Hinkle enrolled at San Bernardino Valley College, where he met Anne, his future wife, in calculus class. He accepted a scholarship to study physics at the California Institute of Technology, and ultimately earned his BS degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He then attended the UCLA Dental School as a Regents Scholar, earned his dental degree and, in 1973, graduated from the UW with a master’s degree and an Orthodontics certificate. He held UW Distinguished Benefactor status for his giving to the Department of Orthodontics.

The Hinkles returned to Southern California, where he started his orthodontic practice in Santa Ana, and later added an office in Newport Beach. He published many articles on orthodontia and temporomandibular joint issues, was recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and was a visiting professor at UCLA’s Dental School. He enjoyed working with his wonderful staff and helping his patients find their best smiles for 28 years.

He pursued many passions over the course of his life, and read extensively in an effort to improve. As a teen he excelled at several sports, including baseball and football, but when he discovered bowling, he started his first career. At the age of 15, he rolled his first perfect 300 game. He turned pro after winning the Los Angeles Examiner Bowling Tournament in 1959. The most significant victory of his career was the California State Masters in 1973. He bowled professionally until the late 1970s, and rolled so many perfect 300 games that he lost count. His library included books on fishing, chess, and poker, but his most enduring passion was golf. He joined the Mesa Verde Country Club in 1976, and was a founding member at PGA West and The Palms Golf Club in La Quinta. He became a scratch golfer in 1993, and his tally of holes-in-one was 12. He had success in club tournaments, played consistently in regional and state events, and traveled to tournaments across the world.

Dr. Hinkle also loved playing blackjack, gin, and bridge. After he retired from orthodontics, he parlayed this passion into his third career,  professional poker player. He played in local events and in the World Series of Poker several times. His competitive highlight came in 2010 at the Los Angeles Poker Classic Shootout, where he defeated a field of nearly 240 players.

Family and friends were all-important to Dr. Hinkle. He and Anne, his wife of 51 years, raised their two sons in Costa Mesa. He played countless rounds of golf with his sons. His grandchildren were a great source of pride, awe, and amusement. He built close friendships with people from all facets of his life, and was known for his sense of humor, drive to improve at everything that he did, and for doing what he felt was right.

Dr. Hinkle is survived by his wife, Anne; sons Scott and Paul; daughters-in-law Kelly and Jessica; six grandchildren; and sister-in-law Catherine Ballard. (Orange County Register)
