DR. BARNEY Y. LIM, PERIODONTICS CLASS OF 1983
Dr. Barney Young Lim died on Nov. 10, 2014 in Portola Valley, Calif. He was 60.
Dr. Lim was born on Aug. 4, 1954 in Rochester, Minn., to Dr. Richard and Catherine Lim. He was the second of nine children. His family lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, before relocating to Santa Barbara, Calif.
Dr. Lim graduated with honors from the University of California at Davis and received his DDS from UCLA before completing the periodontics residency program at the University of Washington. He was one of the first periodontists in California to receive implant training from Dr. P.I. Branemark, inventor of the modern-day dental implant.
Dr. Lim was a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the California Society of Periodontists, the Mid-Peninsula Dental Society, the California Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He previously held faculty positions at UCLA Dental School and the University of California at San Francisco Dental School.
Dr. Lim practiced periodontics in Menlo Park for 26 years. He was a gifted athlete and outdoorsman who spent many happy hours climbing the hills to Skyline (San Diego) on one of his beloved bicycles. He loved skiing and backpacking in the Sierras and played U.S. Tennis Association tennis every season.
Dr. Lim is survived by his wife, Katie; daughter Alayna; son Eric; father Dr. Richard Lim of Santa Barbara; and siblings Alan, Cindy, Dennis, Francine, Gina, Howard and Irene and their families. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine, and brother Eric.
