Myofascial Toothache: A common condition that every dentist must know – presented by Dr. Mark Drangsholt
It is not uncommon for dentists to see patients with pain in their teeth when there are no obvious pathologies. In the past, these cases have been called atypical facial pain or are left undiagnosed, to the great frustration of both doctors and patients. New evidence from UW shows that many if not most are referred from head and neck muscles, and have relatively simple therapies that can completely resolve long-standing “phantom” pains.
Instructors
Mark Drangsholt received his DDS degree from the University of Washington in 1984 and completed a general practice residency at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago in 1985. He returned to the University of Washington and earned his MPH in Epidemiology in 1992, a certificate in Oral Medicine in 1995 and completed his PhD in Epidemiology in 2004. He was appointed as a tenure-track assistant professor in 2006, was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2009, and full professor in 2012. He was appointed Chair of the Department of Oral Medicine in 2010, and continues in that role. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2019.
Thomas B. Dodson is Professor and Chair of UW Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS). A noted clinician, researcher, and teacher, Dr. Dodson is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in the specialty.
Prior to joining the faculty at University of Washington, Dr. Dodson was Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and an Attending Surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital. He previously served as associate professor in the Department of Surgery at Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Dodson completed his specialty training in OMS at the University of California-San Francisco, where he also completed an NIH Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology and a residency in Dental Public Health. An Oregon native and descendant of Oregon Trail pioneers, Dr. Dodson is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Oregon. He received his DMD, cum laude, from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Simon Lin is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He has been the Predoctoral Program Director since 2007. He practices at The Center for Pediatric Dentistry and the Dental Surgery Center, Seattle Children’s hospital. Dr. Lin is board certified and a clinical mentor for pre-dental students. Dr. Lin spent a year conducting molecular genetic research on oligodontia (missing teeth) at Harvard Medical School. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
