Course Description
Beyond the Prophy: A Modern Periodontal & Implant Care Masterclass for the Entire Dental Team Course Overview
Today’s patients expect personalized, evidence‑based care that seamlessly integrates periodontal therapy, wellness‑based dentistry, and implant maintenance. This three‑part CE continuum gives general dentists and dental hygienists the practical tools, updated science, and confidence to elevate everyday patient care.
Through case‑based learning, simplified clinical frameworks, and actionable protocols, participants will learn to:
- Diagnose and stage periodontal disease with clarity and confidence
- Integrate whole-body health concepts into routine practice
- Prevent, identify, and manage peri‑implant disease
- Streamline maintenance protocols for natural teeth and implants
- Communicate with patients more effectively about inflammation, risk, and long-term care

Module 1: Modern Periodontal Diagnosis & Therapy Made Practical (3 hours)
Updated, approachable version:
Periodontal diagnosis shouldn’t feel complicated or overwhelming. This module simplifies the latest staging and grading system, demonstrating how it directly guides individualized treatment plans. Using real‑world cases, participants will learn to identify disease patterns, determine risk, and choose the most effective nonsurgical and advanced therapies.
We’ll also explore new technologies, innovations in biofilm and inflammation control, and clear clinical endpoints so you’ll know exactly when therapy has been successful.
As a result of attending this lecture, you will be able to:
- Use the periodontal classification system quickly and accurately
- Identify patient‑specific risk factors and tailor therapy accordingly
- Integrate efficient, science‑based treatment strategies into daily practice
- Understand regenerative and advanced therapeutic options
- Establish and measure true clinical endpoints
Module 2: Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body — Communicating the Oral–Systemic Connection (3 hours)

Your patients’ mouths tell the story of their overall health. In this module, we break down the science behind periodontal inflammation and how it contributes to — and is influenced by — systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis.
You’ll gain practical strategies for patient communication, risk reduction, screening for systemic conditions, and incorporating wellness‑centered dentistry into your maintenance programs. We’ll also address smoking, vaping, and new approaches to behavior change and oral‑hygiene guidance.
As a result of attending this lecture, you will be able to:
- Explain the oral–systemic connection in simple, compelling language
- Recognize systemic conditions that manifest in the oral cavity
- Support medical providers through dental screening and documentation
- Integrate wellness‑based approaches into periodontal maintenance
- Counsel patients on smoking and vaping cessation using modern tools
Module 3: Implant Maintenance Demystified — Prevention, Detection & Treatment (3 hours)

With the rise of implant dentistry, every dental practice needs a clear, confident approach to implant maintenance and peri‑implant disease. This module clarifies the anatomical differences between natural teeth and implants, helping you avoid common clinical pitfalls.
Participants will learn evidence‑based protocols for peri‑implant assessment, maintenance instrumentation, early detection, and successful treatment of both peri‑implant mucositis and peri‑implantitis.
As a result of attending this lecture, you will be able to:
- Perform a thorough and meaningful peri‑implant exam
- Identify risk factors and design maintainable implant treatment plans
- Select proper instruments and techniques for implant maintenance
- Diagnose peri‑implant diseases with accuracy
- Manage and treat peri‑implant mucositis and peri‑implantitis confidently
Instructor
Nico Geurs is the Weatherford/Palcanis Endowed Professor of Periodontology and Dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. A Diplomate and Director of the American Board of Periodontology, he has spent more than 30 years advancing education in periodontology and implantology for dental students, residents, hygienists, and general dentists.
Dr. Geurs is internationally recognized for his work on:
- Periodontal diagnosis and staging
- Oral–systemic health connections
- Regeneration and advanced periodontal therapy
- Bone grafting and implant dentistry
- Prevention and management of peri-implant diseases
He has published extensively and lectures nationally and internationally. Known for his practical, case‑based teaching approach, Dr. Geurs makes complex concepts accessible and directly applicable to everyday practice.

Itinerary
The natural beauty of Iceland is defined by dramatic contrasts of fire and ice, where volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, and geothermal landscapes coexist in a rugged Nordic environment. Massive ice caps stretch across the island while powerful waterfalls thunder down volcanic cliffs. Along the southern coast, the black sand beaches contrast the icy blue waters and floating icebergs drift toward the sea. The country’s geothermal activity creates steaming landscapes and hots springs, while the skies above often glow with the mesmerizing Northern Lights, making Iceland one of the most breathtaking and natural destinations on earth.

- We then head west to the beautiful Snæfellsnes Peninsula. So many and varied are the features of the Peninsula that it is often called Iceland in Miniature. It holds both a volcano and a glacier, lava fields, craters, waterfalls, black and white beaches, caves, picturesque mountains, calm fishing hamlets, villages and towns as well as gorgeous views along the coastline with rugged rocks and frozen trolls jutting out from the Atlantic waves.

- We then make our way to Reykjavik with a stop enroute for lunch and a soak at Hvammsvik Hot Springs, a unique and authentic experience in unspoiled nature where the natural hot springs glide into the ocean surrounded by majestic mountains and black beaches.
