This course will satisfy 4 hours of requirements to renew sedation credentials (for example, WAC 246-817-745, line 4, in Washington State).
Each year the UW Pediatric Dentistry hosts a continuing dental education course in honor of founding Chair, Dr. David Law, and early faculty member and Chair, Dr. Thompson Lewis. These lectures provide dental practitioners with relevant information pertaining to current practice of pediatric dentistry. This year’s topic will cover pharmacology in pediatric patients.
Course Description:
This course has been designed to qualify as sedation CE for dentists who maintain a sedation permit.
This interactive program focuses on Practical Pharmacology in Pediatric Dentistry. From basic pediatric principles (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenomics) to clinically applicable pearls that you can apply at chairside on Monday morning (updates on nitrous oxide, minimal sedation, analgesic prescribing, emergency medications, and more), this course should not be missed. Case studies will augment the delivery of key points, and a problem-based learning approach is encouraged so that each participant’s questions are addressed. After all, if the oath we all took upon graduation was to, “First, do no harm,” then why would you not want to offer your patients the best and safest treatments possible?
Course Objectives:
As a result of attending this program, you will be able to:
- Discuss the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- Understand the concept of bioavailability and half-life.
- Be better prescribers in understanding how medications are physiologically managed.
- Recognize strategies that lead to better outcomes and more successful appointments.
- Describe best practices with nitrous, sedation, analgesic prescribing, and emergency meds.
Instructor
Mark Donaldson received his baccalaureate degree from the University of British Columbia and his Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy from the University of Washington. He has practiced as a clinical pharmacy specialist, clinical coordinator and director of pharmacy services at many healthcare organizations in both Canada and the United States. He is currently Associate Principal of Clinical Pharmacy for Vizient’s Advisory Solutions, and lives in Whitefish, Montana.

NO REFUNDS requests will be accepted after Thursday, May 6, 2027. Cancellations must be received in email to dentalce@uw.edu The cancellation request must include: the name of the course, name of the person registered, name of the person requesting the cancellation, and the reason for the cancellation.
