Course Description
Frequently Asked Questions in Endodontics with Dr. Joseph deGuzman (3 hours)
This CE course will answer many of the most frequently asked questions asked to endodontists and aid in decision making regarding treatment plans that include endodontic therapy. We will discuss advantages of the operating microscope, when surgical endodontics is indicated, efficient cleaning and shaping, advances in obturation, bioceramics, regeneration and Cone Beam Computed Tomography.
You will learn to:
- Improve decision making when treatment planning
- Understand advantages, disadvantages, and usage of new endodontic materials, procedures and devices
- Answer questions to improve communication between practitioners
Dental Implants – Will it Last Forever with Dr. Joseph Schmidt (3 hours)
In this session, we will look at integration of implants and what helps improve bone to implant contact. Also evaluating what factors and maintenance that can affect integration long-term. We all know dental implants will integrate, but how do we truly make them last a lifetime or is that a false statement?
You will learn to:
- Review host concerns
- Explain factors that can contribute to bone loss
- Treatment plan for success
- Discuss implant surface and connections and the role they play in success
How to Manage the Medically Complex Patient with Dr. Joseph Best (3 hours)
This CE session will provide valuable clinical information for managing medically compromised patients in the dental setting. We will use a patient-based approach to cover common clinical presentations like cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, renal failure, organ transplant, immunocompromise and immune-biologic medications. Practical information designed to help clinicians make appropriate decisions in treating these complex patients.
You will learn to:
- Understand how to manage the cardiovascular compromised patient
- Recognize and manage patients with respiratory disease
- Understand the issues related to treating patients with organ transplants
- Understand the potential treatment issues related to immune-biologic medications
Instructors
Joseph Best, DDS, PhD
Dr. Best is a 1989 graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry (MUSOD) and a adjunct associate professor at the dental school in the division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is the course director for the Medical Emergencies and Pharmacotherapeutics courses at MUSOD and lectures extensively in pharmacology, pain control, medicine, oral surgery and implant dentistry both at the dental school and in regional CE programs. Dr. Best received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and a certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and maintains a private practice with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of Waukesha in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Joseph deGuzman, DDS, MS
After graduating from Dental School in 1989 Dr. deGuzman completed a General Practice Residency at the Clement Zablocki Veterans Administration Hospital followed by 6 years of private general dental practice. He returned to Marquette in 1995 for his residency in endodontics and received his Certificate in Endodontics and MS degree in 1997. Dr. deGuzman is a board-certified Endodontist in private practice and an Associate Professor at Marquette University School of Dentistry. He is an avid basketball fan and golfer.
Joseph Schmidt, DDS
Dr. Joseph Schmidt was a dental lab tech until he received his DDS from Marquette University School of Dentistry. He then did a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Denver General Hospital and now has been in private practice for over thirty years with a focus on dental implants. Dr. Schmidt is currently a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and the International College of Dentists. He lectures on dental implants with an emphasis on reconstruction with osseointegrated implants. Dr. Schmidt was also on the steering committee for the OsseoSpeed FOCUS Study as well as the scientific committee for Astra Tech’s first World Congress.
