Course Overview

Faculty members from multiple departments will participate with senior dental students in this course, which will include seminars in periodontics, a Periodontics term paper, and a Portfolio submission about the diagnosis of a Mucosal or Osseous lesion and integration of its treatment into comprehensive general dental care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Identify the important problems from a patient assessment and form a problem list.
2. Form a differential diagnosis and working diagnosis for a mucosal or osseous lesion.
3. Formulate a diagnostic plan for a mucosal or osseous lesion.
4. Integrate the diagnosis and treatment (including referral if needed) of a complex periodontal, osseous, or mucosal disorder into the comprehensive treatment plan of a general dental patient, using the idealized Stefanac treatment planning sequence.
5. Frame a patient care problem in terms of a PICO or PICOT question.
6. Find appropriate evidence-based information regarding this question.
7. Critically assess the evidence regarding this question.
8. Discuss the relevance of this evidence to the original patient care problem.
