Medical Emergencies in the Dental Setting III

Course Description

Review of management of medical emergencies in the dental office, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Students receive re-certification in AHA Basic Life Support, Level C, for Health Care Professionals.

Educational Objectives

The student will review and refresh their didactic and practical skills in the basic overall management of medical emergencies in the dental setting. The student will have an intensive recertification in Basic Life Support following the guidelines and course materials provided by the American Heart Association. Universal treatment of medical emergencies (positioning, administration of oxygen, vital signs, summoning assistance, diagnosing the problem, treating as appropriate, transporting if indicated) is reviewed, and then more scenarios (as done in O S 533) will be provided.

Course Outline

Recertification in Basic Life Support, review of in-depth medical emergency management in dental practice. Additional emergency scenarios.

Course Expectations

To successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student must attend the course, watch videotaped instruction, participate in hands-on practical sessions, and demonstrate his/her ability to competently provide simulated Basic Life Support and airway management as per the AHA guidelines. The student must also participate in all of the simulated emergencies and demonstrate competency in handling the equipment, providing appropriate therapy (or not, whichever is best) and managing the overall patient from onset of signs/symptoms to resolution of the situation. Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result in an “Incomplete” grade being assigned.
