Course Description

This one-day course will review the physiology of children likely to be seen in a pediatric dental office-based setting while also providing relevant information needed to conduct safe sedation and anesthesia procedures. Topics will include a review of the pediatric airway, cardiovascular concerns for the dental practitioner, and detailed pharmacokinetics/dynamics of sedative agents commonly used in pediatric sedation. The lecture will conclude with detailed discussions on adverse events and their root-cause analysis that is applicable to any dental practitioner and staff.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand differences in adult and pediatric physiology
  • Take preventative measures to avoid sedation catastrophe
  • Position monitors, equipment, and personnel for safety
  • Equip your office with relevant medications for emergencies
  • Prepare your dental team for responding to emergencies

Instructors

Dr. James TomJames Tom currently serves as Immediate Past-President of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists (ASDA) and had been the ADA representative to the ASA Task Force of the 2018 Guidelines for Procedural Moderate Sedation and Analgesia. He is a full-time associate clinical professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, and he is the Dental Program Director for Boston Children’s Hospital’ Pediatric Sedation Outside of the Operating Room Annual Conference, and he is currently an assistant editor for Anesthesia Progress.
