Course Description

As director of the Dental Urgent Care Clinic at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, Dr. Christensen is on the forefront of pain management needs from many patients in today’s dental practice. He also has been involved with the development of the Washington State Opioid Prescribing Rules so he has a close-up understanding of the rules in our state. In this half-day session, he will present an up-to-date view on acute pain management in dentistry and the role of opioids.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this session, you will be able to:

  • Discuss acute pain management in dentistry, the role of opioids and prescribing guidelines
  • Review highlights of the Bree Collaborative Dental Guideline on Prescribing Opioids for Acute Pain Management (2017)
  • Satisfy the new required 3 hours of Continuing Dental Education for opioid prescribers, having completed an overview of the new Washington State Opioid Prescribing Rules

Instructor

Dr. Rolf ChristensenRolf Christensen is Director of the Dental Urgent Care Clinic, Director of Oral Medicine Clerkship, and full-time Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He participated with the Bree Collaborative to help craft Dental Guideline on Prescribing Opioids for Acute Pain Management (September, 2017). He was active in the response to WA State ESHB legislation, including participation with the five health commissions involved with development of new prescribing rules for the State of Washington. Dr. Christensen remains active in implementation of those prescribing rules with a focus on pragmatic compliance with rules and an emphasis on better practices.

Registration

Simply register online. You will be directed to UW CDE’s secure online registration. Register for “Acute Pain Management, the Role of Opioids and WA State Opioid RX Compliance Online Course”. You will receive an emailed confirmation letter with a link to the video. An online exam will be sent upon viewing the entire video with no skipping ahead (we realize this is annoying but it’s the technology). For this training, you must complete 3 hours of the training, so as the video is a bit short, you will be required to read and review the Washington Administrative Code related to prescribing of opioids in the dental setting:
WAC 246-817-901 – 246-817-980

Once you’ve completed the video in its entirety, a link will be sent to you with the quiz. Once you have passed the quiz, a certificate of completion document will be emailed to you automatically. You will have until June 30th of the current CDE course year (September – June) to complete the training.

  • If you do not complete the training by June 30th of the current CDE course year (September – June), you will have to sign up for the course again. No refunds will be given for online courses.

Washington State Dentists and Online Course Materials

Please note that per WAC 246-817-440-4bi, while there is no longer a limit to the number of hours Washington State dentists may take for continuing education provided online, please note that for pre-recorded or other forms of non-live presentations where there is not an instructor presenting in real-time and able to respond to questions in real-time, thirty minutes will count for every one hour completed for this type of activity.
