UW Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery set to open new state-of-the-art facility
January 25, 2017 - The University of Washington Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery announces the opening of the UW Northwest Center for Oral and Facial Surgery in northeast Seattle. Local Syrian refugees receive dental screenings

Dental problems in cleft lip and palate linked to abnormal salivary glands
January 17, 2017 - Dental problems related to cleft lip and palate may be caused by abnormalities in salivary glands and an imbalance of immune compounds in the mouth, according to a study conducted by researchers including a School of Dentistry adjunct faculty member and graduate researcher. Dr. Esther Wilkins, founder of UW dental hygiene program, dies at 100
December 14, 2016 - Dr. Esther Wilkins, who founded the University of Washington School of Dentistry’s dental hygiene program and was widely regarded as the godmother of modern dental hygiene, died on Dec. 12 in Boston at the age of 100. Read more about Dr. Esther Wilkins.

Dentistry faculty helps rebuild jaw and palate in rare procedure
June 3, 2016 - A team of University of Washington surgeons, including two School of Dentistry faculty members, has rebuilt a patient’s upper jaw and hard palate in one day in a rare procedure that utilized three-dimensional computerized design and implant-bone integration technology. January 13, 2016 - Dr. Richard V. Tucker, a world-renowned figure in continuing dental education who had strong ties to the School of Dentistry, passed away on Tuesday morning at a hospital in Bellingham, Wash., after a brief illness. He was 93. Read more about Dr. Tucker.
Dr. Slayton to resign from UW positions
January 11, 2016 - Dr. Rebecca Slayton, director of the University of Washington Center for Pediatric Dentistry, chair of the UW Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the UW School of Dentistry, will step down from these posts and retire from the UW this year, the school has announced. Former Dean Karl-Åke H. Omnell dies at 88
July 2, 2015 - Dr. Karl-Åke H. Omnell, who as Dean of the School of Dentistry from 1981 to 1992 set high standards for clinical competence and stressed the importance of research in dental education, passed away on June 30 at his home on Camano Island in Washington. Dr. Darveau, colleagues shed new light on link between gum disease, vascular inflammation
July 10, 2014 - A new journal publication co-authored by Dr. Richard Darveau, Chair of the Department of Periodontics, has shed further light on how the bacterium that causes periodontal disease can evade the body’s immune response and trigger inflammation in blood vessels outside the oral cavity. January 27, 2014 - Kimberly Hanson Huggins, RDH, a longtime School of Dentistry faculty and staff member who was a strong, active voice for patients with special needs, passed away after a battle with breast cancer on Jan. 20, 2014. New Financial Conflict of Interest regulations
