Donations are being accepted for a scholarship fund to honor the memory of Dr. Mickaella “Mickey” Griffith, a long-time member of the Department of Oral Medicine faculty. Dr. Griffith, 76, passed away on May 10 after a brief illness.
Dr. Griffith had worked at the School since 1979, much of that time in the Dental Urgent Care Center, where she trained students in the diagnosis and management of urgent dental problems.
“The entire Department of Oral Medicine is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend and devoted faculty member,” said Dr. Mark Drangsholt, Chair of Oral Medicine. “She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.” He noted that Dr. Griffith had recently been selected by the Class of 2012 to be a graduation marshal, a mark of the esteem in which students held her.
“It is hard to let go of such a wonderful and beautiful person, and all of our lives will be a bit more empty without her. We must remember her with a smile for all that she has been and for all that she gave to everyone she touched,” said Dr. Edmond Truelove, Professor and former Chair of Oral Medicine.
The Class of 2012 has already pledged $1,500 toward the Mickaella V. Griffith Memorial Scholarship Fund, and has further pledged to continue donating each year after graduation to establish an endowment.
Dr. Griffith, who was born in Leningrad in the old Soviet Union, received her DDS from the University of Tehran in Iran in 1960 and a certificate from Loyola University in Chicago in 1977. She started at the UW as a clinical associate in 1979 and became an instructor in 1984.
A member of the American Dental Association and Washington State Dental Association, she practiced privately in Port Townsend, Wash., and also worked for several years for the Indian Health Service. She was a member of the Northwest Restorative Research Study Club.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
