Runners to raise funds for access to dental care

This year’s team includes (back, from left) Ketan Jumani, Chase Talbot, Dr. Richard Presland, Dr. Bea Gandara, (front, from left) Kaitlin Poppe and Heidi Sarff.

UW dental students will once again raise funds to support community outreach programs by entering a team in Seattle’s annual Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon and Half-Marathon on June 23.

Team members are seeking sponsors to raise money for the School of Dentistry’s Access to Dental Care fund, which supports student participation in a broad range of programs for oral health screening, preventive or urgent care, and education.

In the past year, students provided these services in schools, community centers, and Medical Teams International and SmileMobile mobile dental clinics in Skagit, King and Grant counties. Seattle-based students also held their first joint outreach with the School’s Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) program at a community health fair in Royal City, Wash. This year, outreach efforts will expand to communities on the Olympic Peninsula in collaboration with AmeriCorps.

Donations to the fund are welcome before or after the event at this link, or contact Heidi Sarff (Class of 2015) at heidis4@u.washington.edu.

Checks should be made out to UW Foundation with DNCARE in the memo line and mailed to Glenn West, UW School of Dentistry, 1959 NE Pacific St., HSC B-471, Box 357137, Seattle, WA 98195-7137. They may also be delivered to him directly in the Advancement office, B-471.
