Department of Restorative Dentistry

Education/Training

Dr. Zhang received a DMD from West China University of Medical Sciences (Sichuan University) (1992). He also received a PhD in Oral Biology and a Certificate in Prosthodontics, both from the University of Connecticut (2002). He has had post-doctoral research training in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut (2002). He became a board certified Prosthodontist (American Board of Prosthodontics) in 2009.

Research Interests

Dr. Zhang’s research focuses primarily on dental implantology and tooth regeneration. His research is funded by both the NIH and private industry. Some of his previous and current research projects include the responses of osteoblasts to dental implant surface (osseointegration), the regulation mechanisms in tooth development and regeneration, as well as critical oral mineralized tissue diseases such as bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Dr. Zhang also actively participates in clinical studies of new dental technology, one of which is a zirconia-based all ceramic system (LAVA system by 3M/ESPE). To address the increasing public concerns in the safety and quality of dental products, Dr. Zhang was recently funded to study the safety and quality of crowns fabricated in both domestic and foreign dental laboratories.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Zhang is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of American College of Prosthodontics (ACP). He is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Dental Honor Society. His educational honors include being a three time winner of the Bayer Award (1990, 1991 and 1996). Professional honors include the Morita Research Award honorable mention at the 78th International Association of Dental Research (IADR) General Session in 2000, the Kaiser Permanente Teaching Award nomination at the University of Connecticut in 2004, and a nomination as an American College of Prosthodontics (ACP) Sharry Competition finalist in 2004. Dr. Zhang was invited to serve as an oral session chair in the IADR Annual Sessions in 2008 and 2010.

Professional Service

Dr. Zhang served as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry at the University of Connecticut (2002-2004). He came to the University of Washington Department of Restorative Dentistry as an Assistant Professor (2004-2010) and was promoted to Associate Professor (with tenure) in 2010. He is the interim Director of Graduate Prosthodontics program and the coordinator of Restorative Dentistry Visiting Scholar program.

Dr. Zhang is licensed in the state of Washington. He is an active member of Faculty Practice Clinic (D-4) where he provides direct patient care. His practice is primarily focused on Prosthodontic procedures (such as dental implants, crowns and bridges, cosmetic veneers, removable partial and complete dentures, etc.). One of his patient treatments was recently featured in the official American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) website as an example of what a prosthodontist can do to change a patient’s smile.

Dr. Zhang has been a member of the Editorial Review Board of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry since 2004. He is also a reviewer for a number of professional journals, including The Journal of Biomedical Materials Research (Part A and Part B-Applied Biomaterials), The Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, and The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. He currently holds membershipsin the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP), the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontists (AAFP) and the International/American Association of Dental Research (IADR/AADR).  Dr. Zhang is a member of AAFP Tylman Research Committee, AAFP Research in Prosthodontics Committee and AADR Fellowships Committee. Dr. Zhang also chaired a few oral sessions in recent IADR/AADR Annual Sessions. Dr. Zhang is the President of OKU Sigma Sigma chapter in 2012 and also serves as the Treasurer from 2012 to 2015.

Publications

Dr. Zhang has published three book chapters and more than twenty peer-reviewed articles in internationally reputable journals. He has contributed in fields that include both basic biomedical sciences (Oral Biology, mineralized tissues, tissue engineering, dental materials, etc.) as well as clinical services (Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Dental Implantology, etc.).
