The SCCA Oral Medicine Clinical Service routinely examines SCCA patients for dental problems before cancer therapy begins. To avoid a delay of a transplant, a patient should try to see a dentist before arriving in Seattle. The dental visit should include a thorough examination to detect cavities or other problems. Ideally, these problems should be treated and healed before the patient arrives for treatment as the mouth can be a source of infection following transplantation. These infections can be traced to pre-existing diseases of the teeth and gums. Dr. Mark Schubert, Professor & Director, can be contacted by a patient’s dentist if they have any questions or concerns that they would like to discuss.
