The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers one week externships, open to both University of Washington dental students and visiting third year dental students, as well as dentists trained outside of the University of Washington School of Dentistry. To apply to our externship program, one needs to have fully completed at least two years of dental school training. During the externship, visiting students rotate to Harborview Medical Center, the regional trauma hospital where jaw fractures are treated and is operated as an outpatient clinic.
Please note that the current acceptable time limit on our externship is a ONE WEEK maximum. At this time, we are not accepting international dental students for our externships.
Our Harborview externship is under the direction of Dr. Jasjit Dillon, Acting Chief of HMC Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Externs attend the Harborview operating room sessions on Monday mornings, Wednesday afternoons, and Friday mornings; the Harborview outpatient clinic on Monday afternoons, Tuesday mornings, Wednesday mornings, and Friday afternoons; and the University Hospital operating room session all day Thursday. Tuesday mornings the extern attends a residency teaching seminar at the University. Wednesday mornings are dedicated to the trauma and anesthesia conference, and Friday morning teaching rounds at Harborview.
Visiting dental students may be observers only and may not participate in hands-on patient care including dental assisting. Because you will not be an enrolled student, you will not be charged tuition or fees. However, all expenses involved in your stay will be your responsibility. University of Washington dental students are allowed hands-on externships in our programs.
All completed application materials must be received ten weeks prior to the date you intend to rotate as an extern. UW and non-UW dental students, please contact the program coordinator before submitting your application. If you wish to be considered as a visiting dental student at HMC, please complete and return the following:
- A current curriculum vitae
- Two letters recommendation
- A letter from your School verifying that you are in good standing and that this is approved as part of your curriculum
- Visiting Dental Student Program Application (application packet)
- Documentation of health insurance coverage during your planned visit
- Proof of required immunizations (application packet)
- Data Security and Patient Confidentiality Understanding form (application packet)
- Criminal background check paperwork (application packet)
- The proof of immunizations must be sent to us and then approved before you arrive here.
Visiting dental students will need to make their own housing arrangements. The University of Washington does provide some temporary housing on campus during the summer months only. You can contact the Visiting Personnel Program at 206.543.7636 to arrange for short-term housing in the dormitories.
