Clinical Restorative Dentistry

2 Credits Autumn + 3 Credits Winter-Spring, 8 Credits Total / Quarters 9-11 (Autumn-Spring, Third Year)

Course Description

Clinical training in restorative dentistry procedures, including diagnostic, treatment planning, therapeutic aspects of operative dentistry, bleaching procedures, fixed prosthodontics, occlusal analysis and treatment emphasizing multidisciplinary coordination, and writing appropriate Rx’s for commercial laboratories.

Educational Objectives

Students will treat all assigned patients comprehensively, with the expectation that they manage all modalities of patient care, to include restorative dentistry. The student will gain knowledge, skills, experience, and ethical values in the restoration of diseased teeth, defective and failing restorations, and missing teeth. The objectives are for the student to be able to: (1) diagnose dental caries and to determine that which constitutes a failing restoration requiring replacement, (2) design comprehensive treatment plans to address the restorative needs and desires of the dental patient in conjunction with their overall dental health needs, (3) prepare teeth for appropriate operative procedures and restoration with appropriate materials, (4) prepare teeth, take impressions, communicate with commercial dental laboratories, and place appropriate fixed prosthodontic restorations, (5) diagnose occlusal discrepancies and be able to perform appropriate occlusal treatment, (7) provide elective esthetic procedures to include bleaching, (8) be familiar with the diagnostic and clinical procedures necessary for the restoration of a dental implant

Course Outline

Students are blocked into restorative clinic at various times during the week and have the opportunity to request additional sessions when there is available time.

Course Expectations

To successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student must attend at least 80 clinical sessions. There are no required number of specific procedures, but it is suggested as a goal that students prepare and insert at least 60 combined surfaces of amalgam, composite or other direct filling restorative materials; prepare, impress and insert at least one inlay/onlay; prepare, impress, and place at least six (6) crowns, and preferably 1 posterior bridge. Competency is evaluated by daily faculty grading of all procedures accomplished during a clinic session. Clinical competency examinations may commence during Spring Quarter of the 3rd year, but successful completion is not required until graduation. Grades are formulated on the basis of:

  • 30% for Attendance
  • 30% for Restorative points (quantitative)
  • 30% for Daily faculty grades(qualitative)
  • 10% by Course Director

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result in an “Incomplete” grade being assigned.
